Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties

Under the direct supervision of the ETE Associate Director/Director, the Academic Advisor will support programs and services offered as part of ETE's college retention and success initiatives.

Qualifications

Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to advise students in individual and group settings. Demonstrated knowledge of the areas of academic advising, educational equity programs, assessment and related student support services and programs. Knowledge of California State University admission and course pattern requirements. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally. Training or experience that would indicate an ability to successfully facilitate large group discussion/presentations. Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of computer applications and technology related to advising functions. Ability to assist in the development and implementation of student success and related projects. Knowledge of or ability to learn and apply the laws, regulations, rules and/or guidelines that govern institutions of higher learning. Experience working collaboratively with a team. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of college/university students.

Required Certification: Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Student Affairs/Development, Counseling, Higher Education or a related field.

Responsibilities

85% - Academic Advising: The ETE Academic Advisor will support freshman and continuing students through the provision of developmentally appropriate academic advising. The ETE Academic Advisor will assist students in their transition and matriculation process to CSU Dominguez Hills, provide advising and assist with course selection throughout the year, monitor completion of developmental math and/or English courses, develop academic intervention strategies and provide campus/community resources and referrals. - Ensure appropriate developmental math and/or English placement. - Advise and counsel students for summer, fall and spring course selections. - Review General Education coursework every semester with students to ensure completion towards graduation via individual advising appointments and small group workshops. - Develop and deliver presentations - Access, analyze, and update student records to monitor and track academic progress. - Collaborate with other student support services in the retention of students (i.e., academic probation) - Interpret university academic policies and procedures to support students progress and college success. - Develop working knowledge of lower division requirements for majors and provide pre-major advising. - Orient students to university curricular and co-curricular opportunities. - Create and implement programming to promote student success. - Participate in office staff development, workshops, programs, and administrative functions; attend meetings.

10% - Lead Peer Mentors/Student Assistants: The ETE Academic Advisor will lead and provide guidance and professional development to 2-3 assigned peer mentors/student assistants. - Meet regularly with assigned peer mentors/students assistants to develop mentoring activities targeting first time freshmen students. - Provide feedback and professional development opportunities for assigned peer mentors/student assistants.

5% - Other duties as assigned.
