Job Summary
The Associate Dean of Graduate Studies reports to the Dean of Graduate Studies and provides leadership and oversight for Graduate Office staff activities. The Associate Dean supports the general welfare of graduate students, including advising graduate students individually and in groups, building relationships between the graduate office and graduate students, staff, and faculty, and promoting a culture of success and inclusion in graduate student life.

Job Duties
  • Partner with students, faculty and the Graduate office to resolve graduate students concerns, especially those related to academic progress, personal issues and advisor concerns
  • Work with faculty, students, the Dean, Student Wellness Services, and resources outside Caltech to resolve crises
  • Serve as a resource regarding general graduate student life issues for students, members of the faculty, and staff
  • Serve as a member of the CARE team, which connects students with resources and support, and responds to student crises (this role involves occasional “on-call” time)
  • Provide leadership in and is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and regulations pertaining to graduate student life, especially those related to academics, alcohol and drug usage, and student conduct
  • Serve as a liaison to the Graduate Student Council and advise graduate student leaders
  • Supervise activities of Graduate Honor Council and make recommendations of disciplinary action to the Dean of Graduate Studies
  • Help establish a student culture where diversity is encouraged and where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions, and exercise leadership
  • Provide oversight for Institute policies as a Responsible Employee under Title IX, and Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act
  • Coordinate the execution of Graduate Office programs including Orientation and Commencement
  • Represent the Graduate Office interests in administrative committees
  • Plan and execute special projects at the request of the Dean

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree
  • At least 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in student affairs
  • Excellent leadership and managerial skills and the capacity to supervise and lead a student affairs staff
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills, excellent communication skills, a strong service orientation, and an ability to exercise independent judgment while working in a team-oriented environment
  • Administrative experience, work in higher education, supervisory experience, academic management experience or equivalent
  • A demonstrated commitment to multicultural and individual diversity
  • Excellent counseling and advising skills, the ability to utilize independent judgment in a fair, consistent manner
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • A strong interest in student welfare and a personal commitment to enhancing their development
  • Experience in crisis management
