The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites scholars who conduct research on teaching to apply for an endowed faculty chair at the rank of Professor of Education (tenured) in the domain of teacher learning, practice and/or innovation in teacher preparation. The chair’s scholarly portfolio will be guided by the goals of cultivating stronger pathways and bridges among communities, schools, and teacher preparation and development, as well as strengthening teaching practice at broad scale, with the goal of creating more equitable experiences and outcomes in U.S. schools, especially for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students.
Potential candidates may have a program of scholarship in specific areas of study connected to key aspects of teaching and teacher practice, ranging from core topics in teacher education (e.g., design of prospective teachers’ educational experiences; new methods for preparing teachers to reach all students; connection between teacher preparation experiences and classroom practice) to core topics in addressing educational inequality through teaching (e.g., antiracist instruction and teacher development; culturally sustaining pedagogy; ethnic studies and education) to central issues in the professionalization of teaching (e.g., peer learning and networks; working conditions; teacher development and retention). Preference will be given to candidates whose research relies on collecting primary data in, or in partnership with, school districts and schools.
Harvard has innovative programs of teacher education at the master’s and undergraduate level, and a growing mid-career program of instructional leadership and teacher leadership, each with a strong focus on educational and social justice. The successful candidate should expect to play a leadership role in HGSE’s programs focused on teaching, including making decisions regarding the curriculum, concepts, and learning objectives integral to the programs. The successful candidate should also expect to play a role in HGSE’s Programs in Professional Education focused on supporting teacher development and leadership through residential and online learning opportunities.
HGSE seeks candidates who have the potential to make a powerful contribution to the core curriculum for our master’s and doctoral programs, by teaching required courses and recommended elective courses as part of specific program pathways. The ability to convey conceptual as well as practical knowledge beyond one’s own specific expertise is crucial. High-quality teaching is valued at HGSE, and the school has made a strong commitment to cultivating and supporting strong teaching practices among faculty, primarily through the work of the school’s Teaching and Learning Lab. The successful candidate will have the potential to be a strong contributor to the development and delivery of residential and online professional development programs for practitioners, administrators, and leaders through HGSE’s Programs in Professional Education. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to HGSE initiatives focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. HGSE faculty at all ranks advise students and participate in institutional governance and service.
Candidates will normally possess a doctorate or another terminal degree. Successful candidates
will have substantial teaching and leadership experience; for the rank of tenured Professor,
candidates must have an excellent record of rigorous scholarship and a robust program of
research. The search committee will begin reviewing applications on February 22, 2021 and will
continue until the position is filled. Please submit a C.V., cover letter, research statement,
teaching statement, and three or more representative publications online at
https://apply.interfolio.com/83122. Candidates invited to interview will be asked to submit
additional documents.
