The University of Michigan-Flint Department of Social Work is seeking a Chair at the rank of Full or Associate Professor, who is committed to building a culture of excellence and collaboration through consultative decision-making with a passion for social work education and social justice initiatives. Applicants at the rank of Full Professor will be given preference. The Chair is expected to foster exemplary teaching, research, service, and creativity while promoting social justice, diversity, and global awareness throughout the social work curriculum, as well as provide leadership to help establish a Master of Social Work (MSW) at UM-Flint.

The University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) is a comprehensive urban university of diverse learners and scholars committed to advancing our local and global communities. The School of Education and Human Services (SEHS) comprises the Social Work Department, the Education Department, the Center for Educator Preparation, and the Early Childhood Development Center. Situated in the heart of east-central Michigan, the UM-Flint Social Work program provides students with unique community engagement opportunities that cross between metropolitan and rural areas. The UM-Flint Social Work Department offers a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Substance Use Treatment and Intervention (SUTI), and minors in Substance Abuse Treatment and Crisis Intervention and Disaster Response.  A Master of Social Work (MSW) program is being developed with an anticipated start in 2022. The Department is guided by a culture of inclusivity, a commitment to ongoing critical reflection that positively transforms our roles and relationships with diverse communities, and excellence informed by diverse voices addressing suffering and injustices so that all humans are treated with dignity and respect.

The UM-Flint Social Work Department uses a Developmental Model to support student’s academic and professional growth in the five dimensions outlined by CSWE; knowledge, value, ethics & cognitive affective processes. Part of the program model is the use of academic and professional mentoring of students in these areas is key to a student's success, drawing on students individual strengths & Strengths Finders 2.0 as a platform to their growth and development with a high level focus on EPAS2015 Competency 1, Ethical and Professional Decision Making.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides Department leadership for the CSWE accredited BSW program including curriculum oversight in partnership with course content Leads, planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of CSWE accreditation activities.
  • Provides Department leadership for development, curriculum oversight, planning, and implementation of the MSW program through completion of UM-Flint approval and CSWE candidacy.
  • Leads program and curriculum development to increase enrollment and meet diverse students’ needs.  
  • Leads marketing strategy and on-going efforts for student outreach and retention for both the BSW and MSW programs.
  • Provides support, mentoring in ongoing development of a culturally diverse student body.
  • Serves as the direct liaison between the Social Work Department and SEHS and the University of Michigan-Flint administration. 
  • Oversees the Departmental budget and on-going development, scheduling of courses, teaching assignments, and LEO faculty recruitment and evaluation.
  • On-going commitment to leading the Social Work Department in the delivery of the Mission and Goals as established in the 2018 CSWE Reaffirmation.
  • Initiate recommendations for appointments, promotion, contract renewal, tenure, salary increases and dismissals for tenure-track faculty, LEO (Lecturers’ Employee Organization) faculty, and staff.
  • On-going collaboration with community partners with an emphasis on supporting existing partnerships within the Department.
  • On-going development of interpersonal collaboration between diverse Department members using the Developmental Model approach to social work education.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to promote diversity, inclusion, and engagement at the local, national & global levels.
  • Promotes and engages in scholarly activities.
  • Participates in SEHS and University committee work.
  • Teaches core social work courses.

Required qualifications:

  • A doctorate in Social Work or a closely related field.
  • An MSW from a CSWE accredited program and an accredited institution of higher learning, with the capability of maintaining full licensure with the State of Michigan.
  • A tenured individual in their former institution – eligibility for a tenured appointment at the rank of full or associate professor at the University of Michigan-Flint.
  • A minimum of two years of full-time post-MSW professional practice experience.
  • A minimum of three years of administrative experience with budget responsibility, oversight and implementation and effective leadership within various organizational or institutional settings.
  • A strong record of scholarly publication, teaching and service activities commensurate with the rank of tenured full or associate professor.
  • Substantial experience with CSWE reaffirmation at the BSW and MSW levels.
  • Evidence of social work curriculum development including experience of developing an online social work curriculum and/or program (BSW and/or MSW)
  • Evidence of strong leadership in a diverse context.
  • Evidence of a commitment to promote diversity, inclusion, and engagement.
  • Familiarity with CSWE EPAS 2015

Desired Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for professional social work licensure in the state of Michigan.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach across the social work curriculum.
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with community partners.
