General Summary/Purpose

Our laboratory is focused on cancer genetics and genomics, and translates this information into clinical applications. A major part of this effort involves DNA and RNA sequencing and methods associated with it.

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the Research Technologist will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the laboratory, such as the purification of DNA and RNA, nucleic acid amplification and manipulation, DNA sequencing including massively parallel sequencing. The position will also involve ordering and maintaining supplies, organization of the laboratory, maintenance of equipment, collection of tissues and fluid, culture of cell lines, and basic molecular analysis.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.

Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. Strong mathematical and organizational skills are required.

Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, nucleic acid purification, electrophoretic separations, western blot analysis, PCR, DNA sequencing basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.

Monitors inventory levels of lab supplies, orders supplies weekly in accordance with established policies and procedures, and validates orders upon receipt. Follow up with vendors when problems occur.

Is responsible for helping to maintain the laboratory in a clean and organized manner.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA, or equivalent, in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications

Significant independent research project, not related to normal course requirements preferred.

Some familiarity with genetic technologies, such as DNA purification, PCR, and sequencing also preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience with Microsoft Office applications, email, spreadsheet work, graphing.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
