Job Summary

The CU Boulder Police Department (CUPD) encourages applications for a Residential Service Officer . The Residential Services Operations unit (RSO Unit) serves to partner with the CU Boulder Residence Life and Student Affairs Community to ensure public safety by providing security patrols for the detection and enforcement of policy and criminal violations. This role acts as a visible point of contact and coordinates with the CU Residential and Student Affairs areas of campus including Hall Directors and Resident Advisors.

The members of the University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) are dedicated to providing the highest quality police services in order to improve community safety, protect life and property, and reduce crime and the fear of crime. The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU Boulder Police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a timely and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Community Patrol

• Patrol within all Residential Facilities by foot and detect potential criminal activity and policy violations, investigate, and take appropriate action including enforcing policy violations.
• Identify problems, hazards, and threats and then identify appropriate solutions.

Report Writing and Documentation

• Communicate and record interactions by writing detailed reports, including accurately documenting facts, details, and information presented in a wide variety of ways. Ensure reports are written in a professional manner that will be meaningful in both civil and criminal proceedings. Provide professional testimony at proceedings.

Training

• Maintain operational readiness while deployed on patrol, special events, or emergency situations. Maintains proficiency in public safety skills (i.e. First Responder, CPR/1st Aid, Tourniquet, AED, Incident Command Systems, and Special Event Security screening processes).

What You Should Know

• This position requires varying shift work including, daytime, evening, and nighttime periods between the hours of 7:00 pm to 7:00 am (shift duration will vary), working holidays, and other required dates/times to support a Police Department operating 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.
• This position also requires Special Event Assignments and Emergency Assignments in support of the Police Department, sometimes with little notice.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary for this position is $52,000. This position may be eligible for up to a 10% shift differential for shift hours worked.

What We Require

• Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License in good standing.
• Three years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Positions are subject to a background investigation, including criminal, financial, motor vehicle records background checks; polygraph; an Excluded Parties List System check; reference check; and a drug screen. Physical and psychological evaluations are also required. Per department policy, applicants who have used marijuana within two years of application will be disqualified.

What You Will Need

• Maturity and a team-based approach while working with a diverse and highly active academic residential community.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially during stressful situations.
• Ability to write quality and detailed reports.
• Ability to efficiently and optimally work alone and work in all weather and facility conditions.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook email, SharePoint, Office 365.
• Ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, walk long distances, and climb numerous flights of stairs per shift.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Experience in loss prevention, criminal justice, military, law enforcement, corrections, or other sensitive security services.
• An Associate's Degree or higher.

This position is designated “essential services.” The incumbent is required to respond to requests for work during campus emergencies (snow, wind, rain, flood and any other natural or man-made event) and report to work for his / her regularly assigned shift during emergency campus closures.
