The Division of Administration and Finance is committed to providing quality campus services to faculty, staff, students and external constituencies in support of the university’s mission of teaching, research, and public service. The division includes Facilities Planning & Management, Budget, Human Resources, Information Technology Services and Police & Parking Services.

Position Summary

This position works in Business Services under the supervision of the General Accounting Manager. This position is responsible for preparing financial analyses and reports for campus management, UW System, and the State of Wisconsin using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ). This position will prepare financial journal entries, account reconciliations, and maintain financial records in UW-La Crosse’s automated financial systems. This position is also responsible for the implementation of audit recommendations. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Accountant is expected to have an understanding of GAAP . This position will need to acquire knowledge of the UW System and UW-La Crosse policies and procedures and is responsible for maintaining compliance.

Required Qualifications

• Must have completed a four-year degree with a major in Accounting.
• Knowledge of GAAP .
• Strong computer skills, specifically proficient in use of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with and analyzing automated accounting systems.
• Experience interpreting and analyzing financial data from accounting systems to create reports, complete reconciliations or prepare journal entries.
• Proficient in the development of computer queries to extract accurate data and reports.
• Experience in higher education.
• Knowledge of governmental or fund accounting.

Working conditions and environment

• Occasional overnight travel for training seminars and/or conferences.
• Ability to work extended hours as needed.

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Calculate and prepare journal entries for accounting transactions.
• Assist with general fund accounting, revenue and internal services accounting.
• Assist with resolving variances identified during the performance of account reconciliations.
• Establish and maintain records and reports according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ).
• Prepare financial reports required by the University, University of Wisconsin System and the State of Wisconsin.
• Administer Policies and Procedures related to all accounting transactions.
• Assist and advise staff on accounting processes and recordkeeping practices by providing customer service in a timely, professional manner.

• Interpret and analyze financial data including but not limited to requests from campus management, UW System Administration, or Federal and State Agencies pertaining to the application of Federal and State Statutes, UW System Policies, WI Administrative Codes, and Legislative Policies.
• Assist in financial system upgrades including the gathering and analysis of requirements and implementation through communication and involvement of campus financial managers.
• Perform statistical analysis of various processes to help streamline processes and provide better service.
• Assist campus management to establish appropriate business processes necessary for fiscal management and integrity.

• Assist the General Accounting Manager with special reports, surveys, or audits required by the Legislative Audit Bureau or DOA .
• Assist the General Accounting Manager with various projects related to internal control assessment and make recommendations for processing methods to ensure the integrity and security of UWL’s financial assets.
• Provide assistance in developing training programs for faculty and staff regarding the use of automated financial systems.
• Review and recommend updates to the Business Services webpages.
• Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
