Position Summary: The assistant director of corporate and foundation relations promotes relationships with funding agencies, and seeks new funds in support of institutional priorities of the university and to support the scholarly work of faculty. The assistant director serves as the point of contact for university faculty seeking pre-award grant assistance and as the university point of contact with assigned grant-making agencies. The assistant director develops and manages a portfolio of private and public funding agency constituents in all stages of engagement. The position is a revenue-generating position and reports to the director of corporate and foundation relations.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Manage a portfolio of combined private and public funding constituents.
2. Develop an initial portfolio of public grant-making agencies and promote funding opportunities to campus constituents.
3. Cultivate and steward productive and effective relationships with assigned funding agency representatives to position the university for grant success and to advance faculty scholarship.
4. Serve as university point of contact with assigned funding agency partners.
Grant Proposal Development and Reporting
1. In partnership with the director, provide strategic staff leadership on project and grant proposal development for strategic university priority projects.
2. Prepare grant proposals, reports, and related grant materials partnering as appropriate with the associate academic deans office, and the office of accounting and budget services.
3. Manage the faculty grants process and consult with faculty to recommend funding agencies, develop strategies, and review the university's grant-seeking practices for grant proposal and budget development. Coordinate and host regular grant trainings for faculty.
4. Develop foundational plans to help new faculty seek funding to support their research, and each year coach a small pool of new junior tenure-line faculty in grant-seeking strategies to accelerate their professional growth.
5. Obtain university approvals for grant proposals and reports prior to submission, ensuring that all appropriate university constituents have signed off before proposals are submitted.
6. Monitor and track grant reporting timelines for grants in Millennium database; keep grant PIs informed of reporting requirements, and partner with them to ensure reports are filed in a timely manner.
7. Develop grant activity reports as assigned.
Knowledge Development and Resource Sharing
1. Engage in research to develop an in depth knowledge and understanding of public and private funding opportunities that support liberal arts college faculty members and programs; develop knowledge of and maintain currency on federal grant opportunities (NSF, NIH, NEH, DoE, etc.) and private agency funding opportunities (grants, fellowships, scholarships), and maintain membership in National Council on Undergraduate Research Administration (NCURA) to build awareness of funding cycles and opportunities for grants from federal agencies.
2. Monitor RFP deadlines and disseminate funding opportunities and disseminate grant funding opportunities to the director, vice president for university relations, and other campus constituents as appropriate.
3. Develop a professional network through membership and active participation in relevant associations, listservs and professional development trainings/conferences to build and maintain knowledge of the field (PSGA; NCURA; CLASP).
4. Update and maintain the university's grants website to promote grant opportunities and grants success.
1. Retain accurate and timely constituent information in the Millennium database, and establish a system of record keeping for public agency grants in partnership with University Relations Information Services.
2. Maintain internal systems to track grants activities, and report monthly to the director on all grant procurement activities.
3. Support Office of University Relations activities special initiatives and events as called upon to do so.
4. Position may require occasional travel and evening/weekend hours.
5. Perform other duties as needed.
Position will supervise and train student staff.
Collaborate with director on departmental budget development and management.
Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:
- BA degree.
- Three years working in grant development/grant-writing with a
proven track record of results in generating five- and six-figure
grant funding from a variety of agencies in an educational
- Familiarity with grant-making agencies and grant-seeking
processes and experience developing grant proposal documents and
- Experience conducting research into funding sources; knowledge
of and familiarity with fundraising research resources and an
understanding of use of IRS 990 forms.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent
interpersonal skills and an ability to work with individuals of all
- Highly developed computer skills including experience with
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and a constituent relations
- The ability to work both collaboratively and independently,
solve problems, handle confidential information, and navigate
- Willingness and ability to travel.
- Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide
leadership within a diverse campus community.
