THE SEARCH

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Undergraduate Clinical Education. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative clinician-educator to participate in the expansion of a unique undergraduate medical curriculum. OUWB has seized the opportunity to create a distinctive culture in medical education and the next Associate Dean can build upon a medical curriculum that trains and prepares students to become compassionate physicians.

From its inception in 2007, OUWB was designed to transform medical education by emphasizing holistic physician development – a “liberal arts medical education” that is grounded in evidence-based medical science. Its mission is to facilitate the growth of a medical student into a physician who achieves at levels that surpass competency, who is compassionate, who listens with focused intensity and who communicates clearly with elevated cultural awareness. The curriculum is designed to engage students with the community the school serves and to encourage every student to develop a career-long passion for inquiry and innovation, personal growth, and professional development. OUWB has seen an increase in the caliber and aptitude of its applicants over recent years. The class of 2024 was selected from 6,963 applicants through a holistic admissions process and has a GPA of 3.82 and a median MCAT score of 509 and volunteered over 137,000 hours of service to their communities.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Clinical Education will develop, deliver, assess, and support an outstanding clinical curriculum that aligns with OUWB’s unique educational mission. This individual will have oversight of 130 clinical faculty and 15 staff, and will maintain an integral relationship with Beaumont Health, the largest health care system in Michigan and the exclusive educational partner for OUWB. The Associate Dean will have primary responsibility for overseeing the integrated development of clinical skills in M3 and M4 clerkships and proactively engaged with the teaching faculty to ensure that they are oriented to their roles as educators. The successful candidate will be data-driven and bring a keen knowledge of the trends in medical education as well as a thorough understanding of how to maintain compliance with LCME. The Associate Dean will devote at least 70 percent effort to decanal functions and responsibilities; for the remaining 30 percent effort the individual will be supported to pursue teaching, research, and/or clinical care. The selected candidate must hold an MD or DO degree, hold the rank of associate or full professor, and have a history of demonstrated success with medical student education and a commitment to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion.
