Job Description:
Provides leadership and direction for leadership giving program, gift planning, prospect development, and parent giving, with a focus on systematic growth through thoughtful work advancing the strategic priorities of the University. Serves as senior member of the development team responsible for securing gifts from a portfolio of leadership prospects while providing management and leadership for team focused on leadership giving.

Essential Functions and Qualifications:
- Manages a geographic region and a portfolio of leadership
giving prospects while being responsible for 120 personal visits
and 25 leadership gift solicitations per year and securing between
$2 and $3 million per year.
- Manages and provides leadership to enhance a comprehensive
suite of giving programs including Leadership Giving, Gift
Planning, Parent Giving, and Prospect Development. Oversees the
daily management of these areas and provides vision and direction.
Responsible for successful management of supervisory functions such
as recruiting and hiring, mentoring and performance
management.
- Oversees campaign case development and creation of gift
thresholds for all fundraising projects. Directs identification of
target prospect lists for projects and coordinate strategic
solicitation while driving results to reach fundraising
goals.
- Works in partnership with the Director of Annual Giving to
ensure goals are met for yearly unrestricted annual support.
- Directs regular prospect strategy review with leadership gift
officers, VP for University Advancement, Executive Director of
Development and Director of Prospect Development.
- Works closely with senior university leadership, faculty, and
volunteers including the Board of Trustees, Campaign Cabinet,
Parents Leadership Council Co-Chairs and other volunteers.
- Partners with Director of Reunion Giving for increased
coordination and strategic solicitations of major gift prospects in
reunion cycles to meet giving targets.
- Travels extensively to meet alumni and prospective donors to
connect them with the goals and aspirations of the University.
Travels regularly with President, VP of University Advancement,
Deans and other senior administrators to cultivate and solicit
prospects.
- Represents Washington and Lee nationally as an active member,
presenter and in select leadership roles in strategic fundraising
and advancement organizations such as MaGiC, a consortium of
directors of major gift programs from the top liberal arts colleges
and the Council of the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE),
to ensure W&L is seen as a leader in the field of
advancement.
- Serves as a contributing member of University Development, and
the broader University Advancement team, in furthering Washington
and Lee’s mission and will perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s degree preferred. Successful development experience of at least ten years with increasing responsibilities are essential. Development experience in a University environment, with experience securing six and seven figure gifts is expected, but a combination of equivalent experience and education will be considered. The position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills; a high degree of personal integrity; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; a strong customer service orientation; ability to deal effectively and discreetly with donors, colleagues and allied professionals; talent for motivating others; a high level of computer literacy including experience on donor database systems; high levels of energy, motivation, enthusiasm, humility and a sense of humor are necessary; and, appreciation of and respect for Washington and Lee’s traditions and values to function effectively in this position.

Physical Requirements:
- Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working,
primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in
handling.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and
palm.
- Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of
the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly
for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
- Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for
sustained periods of time.
Types of Work:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with frequent evening and weekend hours required. This position will require travel.
