Support diverse and fast-paced research projects in a neuroscience laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. The laboratory is active in two research areas: 1) behavioral testing of auditory perception and 2) neurophysiological investigations of auditory processing. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including animal husbandry and colony maintenance.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist the principal investigator to coordinate responsibilities of laboratory personnel.
  • Assist with laboratory research activity to include assisting with neurosurgical procedures and neurophysiological and behavioral experiments.
  • Handle animal subjects.
  • Maintain animal records and surgical records.
  • Maintain the physical organization of the laboratory.
  • Ensure that the lab is clean, organized, and in compliance at all times.
  • Environmental health and safety office for lab, coordinate training, monitor and ensure compliance with University and agency regulations.
  • Operate and help to maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor lab supply inventory, anticipate purchasing needs, and order supplies as needed or requested.
  • Interact with vendors and suppliers, and maintain appropriate records for purchases.
  • Utilize computer to maintain data and conduct data analysis.
  • Ensure computer system is regularly backed-up and archived.
  • Conduct literature searches and create documents related to manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Assist with website updates.
  • Maintain communications with veterinarians and the laboratory’s external collaborators.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED and Some college coursework in the Biological Sciences required.
  • One (1) year related laboratory experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, biomedical engineering, or neuroscience preferred.
  • Previous laboratory experience with animal research is preferred.
  • Previous experience in working with research team environment is preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good organizational skills.
  • Detailed oriented.
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, written and oral communication, and organizational skills are required.
  • Experience planning, executing, and troubleshooting projects preferred.
  • The successful candidate will complete the University’s suite of courses in laboratory safety, biohazard, and animal welfare.
  • He/she is expected to know and use good practice in storage of chemicals, care of animals, protection of animal and human subjects, and biohazard protection.
  • Cooperative and positive attitude toward work; ability to work well with others in achieving a goal. Strong ability to work with team members and collaborators. Ability to work independently.
  • Must possess judgment, motivation, and sense of responsibility for ongoing projects.
  • Willingness to work on some weekends and holidays for animal care related tasks.
  • Computational, computer science, or quantitative data analysis experience is required. Familiarity and experience with Microsoft Office programming for recording, organizing, and analyzing physiological, behavioral, and medical data.
  • Willingness to learn specialized software used in the laboratories is essential.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
