Department Summary

Justice Studies Department began as the “Police School” in 1930, offering the first complete college education program for future police officers as an academic program in a regular academic curriculum, otherwise known as a “college major;” this was the first major in the field called Criminal Justice. Through time, scholars found that criminal justice and social justice are intricately intertwined.

The Justice Studies Department offers multiple degrees: B.S., Justice Studies ; B.S., Justice Studies, concentration in Criminology ; B.S., Forensic Science, concentration in Biology ; B.S., Forensic Science, concentration in Chemistry ; M.S., Justice Studies ; MS, Criminology, Concentration in Global Criminology ; Minors in Justice Studies include Human Rights, Forensic Studies, Legal Studies, and Justice Studies.

Brief Description of Duties

We are searching for a lecturer to provide instruction on one or more of our degree programs. This is a part-time temporary appointments made for a teaching assignment only. Part-time temporary faculty are generally welcome to attend department and college meetings and attend campus forums and workshops on a volunteer basis.

Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

All Faculty should be organizing their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. You will have access to this system prior to the semester start date.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Justice Studies, Forensic Science or a discipline related to one of the programs in the Department.
• Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline to which the individual is assigned.
• Ability to and evaluate adult learners. Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
• Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to provide instruction in the Digital Evidence Concentration within the BS in Forensic Science.

Conditional Appointment

Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
