Mission or Goal of Unit

Virginia Commonwealth University RRTC’s Center on Transition Innovations provides evidence-based resources and emerging practices to individuals with disabilities in order to assist them in reaching postsecondary education and employment opportunities.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

This position is needed to support the overall mission of the VCU RRTC’s Center on Transition Innovations. The Postsecondary Transition Associate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation for the center’s inclusive postsecondary education program and will work collaboratively with faculty, community stakeholders and school divisions in the recruitment, implementation and sustainability of the program. The position will include development and delivery of online professional development and resources that focus on preparing for and accessing postsecondary education. Additionally, the position will include training and delivering presentations at national and state conferences. The position will also require an understanding of federal and state laws that impact education and employment ( IDEA, WIOA, HEOA, and ADA ).

Position Responsibilities

The Postsecondary Transition Associate will write publications, develop online training materials, and conduct presentations that focus on preparing youth with disabilities for accessing postsecondary education. This position requires the knowledge to work with school divisions to increase evidence-based practices in the transition to postsecondary education and employment. The Postsecondary Transition Associate will serve as an academic advisor to students with intellectual disabilities, facilitate programming and events, and assist in the recruitment and admission process for the Center’s inclusive postsecondary education program. This position will hire, train, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students working for the program.

In this role, the Postsecondary Transition Associate, will establish collaborative working relationships and network with other researchers in the disability field to advance the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities in higher education, employment, and the community at large. Additionally, this position will support the Center’s postsecondary education research and other grant-related projects, co-author peer-reviewed chapters and manuscripts on the outcomes of CTI research and demonstration studies and projects, assist in the writing of RFP’s for applications, and assist in managing timelines and other aspects of the grant development and implementation process. Lastly, the Postsecondary Transition Associate will have the skills to support the development of annual reports and other technical documents required by sponsoring organizations and agencies.

Required Qualifications

●Master’s degree from an accredited college/university with major coursework in student affairs, counseling, social/behavioral sciences, rehabilitation, or education.
●Knowledge and experience of developing and implementing supports for students with significant disabilities in higher education settings.
●Prior experience in developing and delivering targeted training in multiple live and online formats.
●Ability to communicate effectively through writing and presentations.
●Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct experience working in grant-funded organizations within a university setting.
• Knowledge of developing grant applications.
• At least 3 years’ experience working in higher education settings.
• Demonstrated knowledge of peer-reviewed professional journal writing.
• Ability to maintain accurate and complete electronic and paper filing systems.
• Strong technology skills using various computer programs and the use of applications to assist students or adults with disabilities in higher education and/or employment settings.
