Job Summary
Simmons University is looking for an enthusiastic, organized, knowledgeable, and dependable Staff Accountant to join the Controller's office. The Staff Accountant will play an important role in the daily operations of the University's Finance Office, from preparing account reconciliations to ensuring the accuracy of balances and reporting. Reporting to the Senior Accountant, the Staff Accountant will support accounting functions and prepare accounting records including fixed assets, prepaids, cash, and other areas as needed.
Responsibilities:
Fixed Asset Accounting
- Track and record assets;
- Ensure additions to capital projects are in line with Simmons
policies, procedures, as well as generally accepted accounting
principles;
- Prepare supporting depreciation expense details for each
building on campus;
- Provide auditors with supporting documentation for audit test
selections;
- Coordinate monthly and quarterly meetings with facilities,
technology, and other departments to ensure proper accounting for
their capital purchases;
- Prepare journal entries as needed and maintain monthly
reconciliation
Prepaid Expenses
- Review amortization to ensure recognition is
appropriate;
- Review operating expenses and identify invoices not captured
through the Supplier Invoice process;
- Prepare journal entries as needed and maintain monthly
reconciliation
Cash Entry and Reconciliation Support
- Assist in the ongoing manual bank reconciliation of the
University's cash activity;
- Review daily activity posted by Cashier and reconcile to the
bank activity;
- Communicate and escalate discrepancies or challenges in
reconciliation;
General Ledger Posting and Account Reconciliation
- Manual posting of journal entries prepared by various members
of the University and/or Finance Team;
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or, a Bachelor's degree in
Business with a concentration in accounting required;
- 1-3 years of related professional or professional internship
preferred;
- Strong understanding of basic accounting principles, e.g.
T-accounting with debits and credits;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, e.g.
managing multiple deadlines on a monthly basis;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to
work independently;
- Ability to demonstrate attention to details and good
recordkeeping, i.e. keeping and storing consistent records of
activity
- Clear and effective written and oral communication
skills;
- Proficiency (intermediate level or above) in Microsoft Excel,
e.g. Lookup formulas, pivot tables
