James Madison University’s Department of Management invites applications and nominations for the position of Academic Unit Head (AUH). The department is an academic unit of the AACSB-accredited College of Business and has over 20 management faculty and 770+ management majors. The Department of Management was ranked in the top 10% of all management programs by College Factual in 2020. The department places a primary emphasis on its undergraduate programs and strives to develop students’ theoretical and practical managerial expertise, focusing on interpersonal and team skills, situational and data analysis, innovation and creativity, problem-solving, evidence-based decision making, and ethical reasoning. The major in management offers three concentrations: Management Consulting, Human Resources Management, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Departmental faculty members are highly involved in undergraduate education and play a vital role in the delivery of the College’s Executive Leadership MBA, Innovation MBA, and Information Security MBA programs.

 

The AACSB-accredited James Madison University College of Business includes nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs. The College includes the Center for Entrepreneurship, Center for Professional Selling, Small Business Development Center, Capital Markets Lab, Madison Consulting, and other programs focused on outreach and engagement with the business community. Our very successful alumni hold C-suite positions at major corporations including SAP, Fidelity, Bank of America, IBM, McKinsey & Company, Deloitte, KPMG, and other Fortune 500 companies and readily engage with the College. The faculty are teacher-scholars who are collaborative and supportive colleagues. The College has approximately 4,738 undergraduates and is highly regarded across the JMU campus community.

 

Located in the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley, the city of Harrisonburg is approximately 120 miles from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, VA and is known for its livability, local food, arts, and natural surroundings. JMU is a highly selective, diverse, regional, comprehensive, student-oriented institution with a growing national reputation. The AUH is expected to assume traditional administrative and operational responsibilities such as preparing schedules, providing faculty support and leadership, serving as a liaison between senior leadership and the department, identifying and advocating for departmental resources, supporting the institution’s commitment to diversity, performing faculty evaluations, and developing a departmental strategy for curriculum, alumni engagement, and student success.

 

The ideal candidate must possess a Ph.D. or terminal degree in management or a closely-related field from an AACSB-accredited institution. Applicants must have sufficient teaching, research, and service credentials to qualify for tenure in the Department of Management at James Madison University. Previous experience as a department chair or some other significant academic leadership experience as well as demonstrated commitment to diversity is beneficial. The position requires strong communication skills, the capacity to manage multiple competing priorities, and the ability to build effective relationships with a range of stakeholders.
