The School of Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor. Purdue University seeks to attract exceptional candidates with interests and expertise in Convergent Manufacturing. A convergent manufacturing platform is a system that converges heterogeneous materials and processes (additive, subtractive and transformative) in one platform as inputs yielding functional devices and components for systems as an output while equipped with modularity, flexibility, connectivity, reconfigurability, portability, customization all this aided with Industry 4.0 (I 4.0) principles. The manufacturing system also converges the integration of physical and digital components along with the sensor networks for process monitoring and production. We encourage applicants who have a strong interest in innovation and entrepreneurship in this area. Applications areas may involve but are not restricted to cellular agriculture, food manufacturing, hybrid manufacturing for transportation, biomedical, biomanufacturing, digital manufacturing, manufacturing for space, sustainability, and nontraditional manufacturing. In conjunction with the aforementioned focus, candidate interests are expected to provide a highly synergistic framework to augment the school’s and college of engineering’s progress in manufacturing towards convergent research, education, innovation, and entrepreneurship opportunities for societal impact.

 Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Engineering or a related discipline and demonstrate excellent potential to build an independent research program at the forefront of their field, as well as the potential to educate and mentor students.  An active interest in entrepreneurship is valued. The successful candidate will conduct original research, advise graduate students, teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses, and perform service at the School, College, University, and professional national and international levels.

Established in 1882, the School of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest of Purdue’s engineering schools and has granted over 28,000 degrees.  The School has become synonymous with innovation and outstanding accomplishment in engineering research, education, global engagement, and entrepreneurship. In addition to supporting faculty expansion, the School’s fundraising has enabled the newly-opened, LEED-certified, $34.5M Roger B. Gatewood Wing of Mechanical Engineering with substantial space dedicated to design research and education; the $30M LEED-certified expansion of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories; an $8.2M expansion of High-Pressure facilities at the Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories; and numerous endowed scholarships and fellowships.  Its annual research expenditures and endowment/trust funds have grown rapidly to $24M per year and over $80M, respectively. The School of Mechanical Engineering is home of Herrick, Zucrow and Maha research laboratories with significant infrastructure and a long tradition of collaboration in manufacturing with industries and national laboratories. Purdue is also home to Birck Nanotechnology Center with extensive access to user fab-lab and electronics manufacturing. In addition, large scale hands-on design and prototyping facilities such as the Bechtel Innovation and Design Center, Anvil co-working and student incubator, Foundry and the new convergence facility helping students and faculty transform ideas into innovation through entrepreneurship.
