Vice President, Alumni Engagement

Boston University

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston University (BU) seeks an enterprising and seasoned advancement professional to serve as its next vice president, alumni engagement (VP). This opportunity comes at a pivotal moment in BU’s history, as the university continues a dramatic upward trajectory in its reputation and academic standing; attracts an increasingly competitive pool of students; and recruits faculty members who are thought leaders in their fields. The next VP will join the university as it builds upon the successful completion of its first comprehensive fundraising campaign and prepares to implement an ambitious strategic plan that will further enhance academic programs, enrich the student experience, and create a truly diverse and inclusive learning environment. A key component of that growth will be a significant expansion in the depth and breadth of alumni engagement opportunities and a sustainable culture of philanthropy to support of the university’s mission and aspirations.

Reporting to the senior vice president for development and alumni relations, the VP is responsible for providing innovative leadership and strategic vision to all aspects of the university’s alumni programs, outreach, and annual giving efforts. The VP will formulate and implement comprehensive and innovative programs that utilize the rich and varied resources of the university and offer value to BU’s 346,000+ living alumni who are geographically diverse and have a wide array of personal and professional interests. Overseeing four direct reports and a total staff of 45, with anticipated capacity for growth under the emerging strategic plan, the VP will build a culture of high achievement, accountability, and collaboration, and further integrate alumni and annual giving programs into the university’s broader development efforts.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic and creative thinker, a persuasive communicator, and an excellent team player eager to work in close partnership with academic and administrative leadership and colleagues across campus. The VP will have a solid track record of successfully implementing change and building programs that have transformed overall advancement efforts at an institution, and possess experience recruiting and mentoring a high-performing team capable of meeting ambitious goals. In addition, the VP will bring a thoughtful, entrepreneurial, strategic approach to transforming new ideas into executable, measurable, and enduring programs that lead to greater involvement of and service to alumni.
