Assistant Professor of Chicano and American Literature

San Diego State University Imperial Valley seeks applicants for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chicano and American Literature, beginning in Fall Semester, 2021. The position is a joint appointment to San Diego State University, Imperial Valley (SDSU IV) and the Department of English and Comparative Literature on the San Diego campus. The primary appointment is at the San Diego State University, Imperial Valley (Calexico and Brawley).


The primary teaching and research specialization of this position is Chicano literature. The successful candidate will also teach American literature from the 1800 to the present. The normal teaching commitment is a 3/3, with ample opportunity for course reassign time.


Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in English or an equivalent field (degree in hand no later than August 2021) and demonstrate potential for excellence as a scholar-teacher, including successful teaching experience, currency within the candidate's field, and/or publication of scholarly research.


We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. Candidates must indicate in their cover letter how they meet at least two or more of these criteria.

Located 120 miles east of San Diego State University, SDSU Imperial Valley in Calexico is five blocks from the border with Mexicali, Mexico. SDSU Imperial Valley also has a small campus in Brawley.
