The TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Counselor/Advisor serves as an academic advisor, case manager, and academic coach for the TRiO SSS students. The Counselor/Advisor will meet with project participants to plan not only course and program schedules, but also to determine personal, life, transfer and career goals; ensure that students receive information and instruction regarding financial literacy; offer personal advising on an as-needed basis; and assist in coordinating SSS workshops on academic, career, transfer, and financial topics. The Counselor/Advisor will also assist with coordinating the SSS project’s cultural activities and trips to four-year colleges and work in direct relationship with the students, advising them in their course selection, and assisting them in identifying potential career and transfer possibilities while in the community college setting. The Counselor/Advisor will also assist with teaching the TRiO FYE course each fall semester.




Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or similar field required; Master’s degree in these fields preferred; Minimum two years related work experience to include working with at-risk, low-income, and/or first-generation students preferred.  Experience overcoming barriers similar to SSS students preferred (low-income, first-generation status, or a documented disability).



Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills to guide students in their academic decision-making; excellent organizational and planning skills in dealing with the career and transfer student population; experience and skill in mentoring, tutoring, or counseling; proficiency in computer applications such as Word and Access; ability to work independently and accurately under pressure and make decisions in accordance with established policies, procedures, and grant regulations; database system skills; attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in extensive record-keeping; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to interact with a diverse campus community.
