EM Technician will work in close conjunction with the senior EM staff in the VCU Microscopy Core Facility under the general supervision of the Core Director.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
EM Sample preparation/General lab duties – Prepare samples for TEM and SEM imaging and take and analyze images for University researchers.
Sectioning specimen blocks for TEM .
Process biological specimens for TEM using various techniques, including chemical fixation and embedding.
Process specimens for SEM using various techniques, including critical point drying.
Operate or assist on the Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopes to image samples for researchers
Prepare buffers and solutions as required and directed
Ensure designated work area, and various pieces of equipment used are clean and prepared.
Maintain records of specimens, lab safety, and equipment usage; and report maintenance issues of equipment.
Learn new techniques that will help investigators advance their research.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 3 year of experience in a laboratory setting or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 5 years required.

Independent thinker willing to tackle challenging problems.
Proven organizational and time management skills to successfully set priorities, meet established deadlines and recognize new problems with constantly changing priorities and frequent interruptions.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment.
Ability to diplomatically and professionally interact with all levels of University staff and external contacts.
Experience in sectioning with microtome and ultramicrotome
Detail oriented
Good hand/eye coordination and ability to work with tiny samples
Knowledge of standard laboratory and safety procedures.
Familiarity with electron and/or light microscopy sample preparation protocols.
Prior experience using a Zeiss EVO -50 and Jeol JEM -1200/1400 or equivalent TEM / SEM systems.
The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

BS degree in Biological, Biomedical Sciences or related discipline with 3 years of experience working in a microscopy lab environment.
Ph.D. in related field
