The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Mass Communication to teach in the public relations major beginning August of 2021. Candidates should feel at home teaching all levels of undergraduate PR courses, including public relations writing, social media, case studies and more. Successful candidates will be familiar with the history of public relations. There will be opportunities to teach in the mass communication core as well, including mass communication theory and research methods. The teaching load for junior faculty on the tenure track is 4/3. Summers are optional for extra compensation.

The department has an active PRSSA chapter, and an interest in involvement with PRSSA is highly desired. While the emphasis of this position is on teaching, pursuit of a research agenda or creative activity in our field is required. Advising undergraduates for registration each semester and university service is required.

About the Department of Mass Communication: The Department of Mass Communication is a liberal arts program offering tracks in Broadcasting, Journalism, and Public Relations. The department employs a balance of theory and practice in the study of the dynamic field of mass communication. Students have opportunities for hands-on learning through The Pine Needle campus newspaper, WNCP-TV cable channel, and the Public Relations Student Society of America. Graduates from the program are prepared to pursue professional careers in their chosen field or to pursue graduate studies in the discipline. The faculty and staff of the department enjoy a tight-knit relationship and are seeking an energetic team member to be part of a student-centered, hands-on department that is highly engaged on campus. Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:  Ph.D. in mass communication or closely related field. Teaching experience required. Professional media employment experience required. Knowledge of InDesign and ability to teach layout and publishing is preferred.
