Assistant Professor of Screenwriting and Media Arts Production 

 

Position Summary: 

The Department of Cinema and Photography at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (https://mcma.siu.edu/cp/) is seeking an outstanding teacher and creative practitioner to join our multidisciplinary faculty, as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Media Arts Screenwriting and Production. The selected individual will have the opportunity to develop new courses and curricula at both the undergraduate level in the Cinema specialization and at the graduate level.  The position start date is August 16, 2021.   

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Principal responsibilities include teaching, supporting student projects, and participating in service to departmental, college and university-wide committees in addition to serving on graduate committees.  Undergraduate classes could include writing for narrative cinema, TV, documentary, etc, as well as multiple areas of production.  Graduate classes would be taught within an interdisciplinary environment that includes a variety of artistic practices. The development of new courses and curricula at both the undergraduate level and at the graduate level is encouraged.  The successful candidate is expected to continue an active creative/research agenda. 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in writing, media production, or a closely-related fields, required at the time of the appointment, with a proven record of exhibition/creative research in the discipline. Applicants must have the ability to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced level courses in writing for narrative cinema, as well as experience in multiple areas of production. Candidates also must be able to teach writing in one or more of the following areas:  documentary, experimental film/video, podcasting, installation, and creative writing.    

Preferred Qualifications: 

Preference wil be given to applicants who engage with storytelling in innovative ways, across platforms, and who show an evolving vision for the future of storytelling. The ideal candidate will be a media artist with experience in writing for all media, with emphasis on screenwriting and film/video production, and will have a record of effective teaching and an active research/creative practice in media production, including screenwriting and film/video.
