Position Summary 

The tenure-track Assistant Professor of Native American & Indigenous Studies (NAIS) will be responsible for teaching 21 credits each academic year in the Department of NAIS. The candidate for the position will contribute to the growth of the NAIS program by teaching both core and elective courses in the major; develop new courses to complement the existing curriculum, advise and mentor NAIS majors, double majors, and minors. Finally, the candidate will contribute service to the department through participation in department events and activities, curriculum assessment, as well as share in department and College recruitment and outreach efforts.   

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Ph.D. in Indigenous Studies (American Indian Studies, Native American Studies, or NAIS) or a Ph.D. in a related interdisciplinary or disciplinary program. Doctoral candidates (ABDs) will be considered in the same programs of study but must have a degree in-hand by August 2021.  
  • Specialized knowledge of Indigenous North America (Native American, Alaska Native, First Nations and/or Kanaka Maoli Peoples)   


Preferred Qualifications 

  • An educational background in Indigenous Studies (AIS, NAS, and NAIS) at the bachelor's, master's and/or doctorate degree levels.  
  • The research area of the applicant is open but should reflect specialized knowledge of Indigenous North America with a focus on Native American, Alaska Native, First Nations, and/or Kanaka Maoli Peoples.   
  • A demonstrated record of extensive interdisciplinary training.  
  • An established record of College-level teaching that demonstrates knowledge of and embraces Indigenous pedagogies.  
  • A demonstrated record of mentoring Indigenous students and/or other underrepresented students.   
  • A record of collaborative and community-based research with an Indigenous community.  

Major Responsibilities 

  • Teach 21 credits in an academic year; this also includes a 3-credit research release per academic year.  
  • Contribute to the NAIS department by teaching both core and elective courses for the major.  
  • Develop new courses that complement the existing curriculum.  
  • In conjunction with the NAIS Professional Advisor and NAIS faculty provide academic and career advising to NAIS majors, double-majors, and minors twice during the academic year.  
  • Contribute service to the NAIS department by participating in department events and programming; annual curriculum and program assessment; participate in the shared responsibility of representing the department at recruitment events, commencement, and Senior-seminar research symposia.  
  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate NAIS student research.   
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to create and teach online courses for the NAIS program; attend and participate in necessary Canvas trainings to accomplish this.  
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.  
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.  
  • Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary is $54,000,  plus a comprehensive benefits package.
