The School of Law and Social Justice is the home of the Liverpool Law School and the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology (SSPC), and in 2020 moved into a £25 million bespoke building on the University campus.  The School of Law and Social Justice seeks to provide outstanding education in law, criminology and sociology and to make a distinctive contribution to world-class scholarship, knowledge exchange and policy development. The School is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is supported by its Head of Operations, Anna Vowles and a team of Professional Services staff.

The School has strong international partnerships and a very diverse student body. It works with a range of local partners to engage students and staff in social justice projects and activities. Liverpool Law School, one of the largest in the UK, runs an award-winning Law Clinic; SSPC partners with Interchange, a charity which organises high quality student opportunities with the region’s third sector, including live projects such as field research, work placements, supervised study in the field and short-term placements. The School places great emphasis on the quality of its environment and believes that successful research and teaching flourishes in an atmosphere of mutual support and respect. It also relishes the opportunities that stem from being in one of the most interesting cities/regions in Europe.

The Dean will provide strategic direction and leadership for staff based within the School, setting priorities, fostering a supportive and intellectually rigorous culture for students and staff, and supporting a programme of public engagement in the work of the School. You will be expected to demonstrate academic leadership at both Faculty and University level by providing senior level contribution to Faculty and University projects and to the achievement of the University’s Strategy 2026.

You will be able to demonstrate: significant leadership experience, project management and people management skills; a strong track record in equality, diversity and inclusion; a strong track record in research and the delivery of taught programmes; the ability to develop, implement and measure achievement of academic and business plans, including financial and budgetary control; and a highly developed awareness of the national and international factors which impact on the University and how this affects strategy, policy and day-to-day business. You will chair the School Management Team and will play an active role in the Faculty Management Team.
