Research Technologist

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the research technologist performs a variety of both routine and complex research laboratory procedures in accordance with established standards and protocols. This individual will be expected to acquire a level of knowledge to properly perform experiments and analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical. Specific duties will vary according to project assigned.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of research laboratory techniques with primary focus on endothelial and immune cell biology related to the study of critical illness and pneumonia.
  • Techniques to be performed include, but are not limited to: cell culture (including primary cells and/or stem cells), PCR, cloning, sequencing analysis, and gel electrophoresis.
  • In addition, projects will involve DNA and RNA isolation from mouse tissue samples.
  • Other responsibilities include.
  • Preparing and determining suitability of solutions and reagents following defined formulas and procedures.
  • Documenting and reporting all experimental results.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting equipment, routine repairs or notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur.
  • Performing related general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some familiarity with basic post-undergraduate laboratory research techniques is necessary.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • This work requires precision and attention to detail.
  • Individual should have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.
  • Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a dynamic laboratory.

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

  • Expertise in handling small rodents (mice and rats) for experiments.
  • Performing survival and non-survival surgeries in mice.
  • Harvesting organs for analyses.
  • Assisting with immune cell isolation procedures and cell staining for flow cytometry; performing behavioral testing in rodents using standard neurobehavioral tests; performing RNA isolation and qPCR to assess gene expression levels; and participating in the design of research studies.
  • Independently compile and analyze research data using various relevant statistical computer software applications.
  • Coordinate and maintain data reports and database files on progress of research.
  • May receive, inventory, enter, and organize collected data.
  • Significant contributions which lead to authorship on publications and oral/poster presentation of novel data will be highly encouraged.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
