Position Summary:

The Soil Health Outreach Specialist is a new, exciting position in the UW-Madison Division of Extension designed to meet the research-based educational and outreach needs of agricultural producers in Dodge and Fond Du Lac counties. Extension serves the people and communities of Wisconsin by addressing local, statewide and national issues, improving lives through research-based education, fostering partnerships and action, and facilitating positive impacts.
This position is a part of the Division of Extension's Agriculture Institute. The Agriculture Institute facilitates and develops research-based educational programs and informational materials around agricultural and horticultural topics for farm businesses, individuals and families in Wisconsin.
The Soil Health Outreach Specialist will be a leader in applying research findings and providing education and outreach efforts around soil health. This is done through assessment of needs and designing, delivering, and evaluating research-based educational programming and services to meet these needs. This position is a part of the Agriculture Institute's Crops and Soils Program and will specifically focus on:
1. Soil health, including the biological, chemical and physical properties of soil that contribute to improved soil health
2. Farmer adoption of conservation-based cropping practices such as reduced tillage, cover crops and diversification of crop rotations.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Masters degree in a related field of study such as soil science, plant science, horticulture, agronomy required. PhD preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required:
1. Three years of professional experience relevant to the programmatic responsibilities of the position;
2. Demonstrated skills in interpreting, utilizing and applying evidence-based information and research findings
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using a variety of methods and technology; and
4. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.

Preferred:
1. Demonstrated experience in understanding experimental design, statistical analysis and interpreting research data.
2. Demonstrated experience with building diverse, collaborative partnerships
3. Demonstrated educational program development skills including planning and implementing programs; evaluating learning experiences; and communicating program impact and value to stakeholders
4. Demonstrated experience using collaborative leadership to accomplish project goals, including the ability to convene and facilitate diverse groups of stakeholders
5. Demonstrated fiscal management skills including budget development
6. Demonstrated ability to write grants and establish partnerships that pool or leverage public and private funds in support of the Institutional mission
7. Strong interpersonal relationship and problem-solving skills in a team setting

Additional Information:

1. The primary accountability relationship for this position is the Agriculture Institute Director for supervision, compensation and benefits and performance reviews
2. Expectation to make arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions;
3. Work evenings or weekends as needed to meet programming needs
