Job Summary

The Exploratory Studies Program at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Assistant Director for First-Year Advising Initiatives! This is a newly created position responsible for the development and assessment of cross-campus student support initiatives for first-year and exploratory students. This includes key liaison-ship duties with campus constituencies as well as a dedicated role partnering with campus efforts around proactive engagement with students. A key aspect of this role will be to incorporate increased inclusivity and cultural competence into campus-wide first-year advising efforts, as well as partnering with relevant offices to improve equity and anti-racism awareness among students and staff. The individual in this position will report to the Director of First-Year & Exploratory Advising and partner closely with other advising leadership members on campus to build this new role and to support campus advising initiatives and efforts.

Who We Are

CU Boulder’s First-year Advising Network provides a common approach to key aspects of student support and academic advising while also maintaining the unique disciplinary context of each individual college, school and program. First-year advisors are embedded in colleges, schools, and programs and collaborate alongside the Office of Undergraduate Education through coherent oversight and distribution of financial resources. This model strives for a consistent and equitable experience among students and focuses on exploration, discovery, and supportive connection. First-year advisors work toward common outcomes through a consistent approach around holistic, proactive student support and form a community of practice across the campus-wide network.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Development, coordination and assessment of large-scale campus programming:
  • Partner with Director and campus first-year advising leadership to coordinate campus-wide efforts in academic advising and student programming.
  • Connect with relevant offices to coordinate advising participation in the larger First-Year Academic Experience initiative.
  • Develop a program for first-year students with a menu of options including attending activities and/or information sessions related to belonging, engagement, student success and other aspects of the transition to college and a best-fit academic path.
  • Explore possibilities for programming to support students in academic difficulty, at-risk students, underrepresented students, and other groups including working with campus partners in the Academic Coaching and Academic Support Network.
  • Engage with “CU 101” course efforts.
  • Collaborate closely with Residence Life, including coordination of common elements related to first-year advising and integration of advising content into “resX” curriculum and efforts.
  • Investigate "exploratory" Living-Learning Community (LLC), including teaching one-credit FYXP 1000 as part of that LLC.
  • Ensure diversity, equity and inclusion play important roles in program development.
  • Research, develop and support the implementation of additional initiatives as an ongoing key component of this role.

Leadership in equity and anti-racism efforts across the first-year advising network:
  • Partner with larger cross-campus anti-racism efforts to adopt common elements across first-year advising.
  • Facilitate First-Year Advising Network connection to related professional development and ongoing training opportunities at CU and beyond.
  • Collaborate closely with the Office of Data Analytics (ODA), Institutional Research (IR), the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement (ODECE), and the CU LEAD (Leadership, Equity, Achievement, and Diversity) Alliance in supporting new and existing first-year student efforts.
  • Demonstrate a continuing commitment to adaptability and improvement in areas of inclusivity, equity and anti-racism.
  • Engage with CU Boulder’s IDEA Plan to support first-year advising as part of a larger campus transformation in areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.

First-year student academic support and proactive outreach:
  • Coordinate with larger Office of Undergraduate Education efforts to streamline campus-wide Course Alerts process including outreach and assessment at the first-year advising level.
  • Support Director and advising leadership to develop content and practices for proactive outreach efforts.
  • Partner with the Director to collaborate with other advising-related programs to ensure an integrated student experience.
  • Capture data and metrics in support of college efforts to identify key areas and gaps for underrepresented students persisting across all majors and programs.

First-year advising administration support:
  • Collaborate closely with predictive analytics efforts for the First-Year Advising Network, focusing on aspects of a coordinated approach across all colleges, schools, and programs.
  • Support implementation and communication around new logistical initiatives.
  • Direct common elements of New Student Welcome, College Day onboarding events, etc, and coordinate common first-year advising newsletter.
  • Liaison to parent/family relations efforts on campus.

Professional development:
  • Work toward a consistent level of professional development, including but not limited to relevant conferences, mentoring opportunities, coursework, workshops, and research.
  • Maintain a high level of competence in skills and knowledge related to supporting advisors, coaches and students alike.
  • Stay connected to student support offices and academic departments on campus, including staying up-to-date on processes and policies of these offices.

What We Can Offer
  • Salary Range is $60,000-$65,000.

What We Require

  • Completed Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of five (5) years of professional advising or academic coaching experience in a higher education setting; OR completed Master’s degree and three (3) years of professional, related experience. Two years of graduate assistantship work in a related field can be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • Experience creating and/or implementing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with exploring students.
  • Experience managing parent concerns.
  • Experience with student success initiatives.
  • Experience applying student development theory.
  • Experience working with students in academic difficulty.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • In addition to minimum requirements, candidates meeting preferred requirements will have a completed Master’s Degree in higher education administration or related field; proven leadership experience through supervision or program management; and classroom teaching experience.
