Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor to teach students in one of the preeminent Broadcast and Digital Journalism programs in the country. The full-time position starts Fall 2021.

This hire will support the Newhouse School’s goal of producing highly-skilled and ethical journalists who can work across multiple platforms in different roles for both traditional and innovative news organizations. Teaching students how to report on diverse communities is also a priority of the Newhouse School.

We seek candidates who can demonstrate experience with multiplatform news production including television, digital and social media. Candidates who can also demonstrate experience in newsroom management of journalists working across these platforms are especially encouraged to apply.

Candidates will indicate enthusiasm and promise for exemplary teaching, whether through prior teaching experience or similar professional roles mentoring/supervising young journalists.

The successful candidate will need to show potential for conducting academic scholarship or industry-related creative activity/research that will position the hire as a recognized expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department, the Newhouse School, and Syracuse University is expected.a

Master’s degree or higher is preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess curiosity and the ability to learn new technologies as he/she keeps up with the dynamism of the ever-changing industry.

Primary teaching responsibilities include courses required of all Broadcast & Digital Journalism majors: cross-media news writing, audio reporting and newscast production, digital and social media content production, video reporting and newscast production. Elective courses taught may include classes in newsroom management and/or specialty reporting (investigative, political, health, etc.).

Responsibilities

In addition to an academic year teaching load and pursuing a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the School, this faculty member will also engage in a variety of service duties, including: academic and career advising of undergraduate and graduate students, school and university committee service, curriculum development and assessment, and community/industry outreach.

About the Broadcast & Digital Journalism Department

The Broadcast & Digital Journalism Department ( BDJ ) at the Newhouse School is regarded as one of the top training grounds for broadcast and digital journalists. Newhouse BDJ alumni are employed at all levels of journalism organizations around the world. BDJ alumni help provide students with an employment pipeline into the professional world.

The BDJ faculty are a diverse group of journalists with extensive professional experience and varied academic research and creative interests. We are passionate about the goal of training the journalists of tomorrow. We require our students work very hard at developing their skills. This requires us to work just as hard to give them what they need. Teaching in BDJ is NOT a step into semi-retirement.

The BDJ faculty also practice “service after the sale,” by building professional connections to help students find first jobs and continue to consult on future career moves. We have an excellent track record in building the Newhouse BDJ alumni network.

The department has a close working relationship with a number of news organizations. For example, Nexstar Broadcasting Group is a partner with our Graduate Capstone experience in Washington, DC. BDJ students produce stories in our nation’s capital tailored for individual Nexstar stations around the country. Also, we partner with The E.W. Scripps Company on its innovative Scripps Journalism Career Program and supply students to both Hearst and TEGNA producer training programs.

Newhouse BDJ students have done very well in national competitions over the years.
