Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications offers a unique opportunity beginning July 2021: the position of Chair of the Public Relations Department — one of the most successful and highly-regarded public relations programs in the United States. Newhouse is one of the few schools to offer public relations education and professional training at the undergraduate, master’s, doctoral (concentration), and mid-career levels, both here and abroad.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader who understands the rapidly changing field of public relations and the opportunities that technological developments offer students and faculty.

Rank is open; the successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualifications

Professional experience, academic credentials including administration, and national recognition in public relations is highly desired. Ph.D. and APR preferred. The successful candidate will have prior university teaching experience.

We are looking for someone to join us in developing strategies that keep the program strong and innovative. The Chair will be expected to maintain a national reputation and support faculty in their scholarly or creative activities.

Responsibilities

The Chair’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to collaboration with the School’s administrators to further the School’s professionally-oriented mission, oversight of undergraduate and graduate curricula, recruitment, admission, advising of students in the M.S. degree program in public relations, and building and maintaining relationships with current and prospective students and their parents, alumni, and donors. The Chair of the Public Relations Department teaches three courses per academic year. Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

About the Public Relations Department:

The Department offers the following degrees: A Bachelor of Science in Public Relations; a Master of Science in Public Relations; a Master of Science in Communications Management (executive); and a joint degree in the study of public diplomacy with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Additionally, the Department houses the William P. Doescher Lab for Advertising and Public Relations and is home to the W2O/Newhouse Emerging Insights Lab and the PAN ePortflio Portal, created in partnership with PAN Communications.

The Public Relations Student Society of America chapter at Syracuse University is an alpha chapter established in the mid-1960s with more than 200 members, and is home to Hill Communications, an award-winning, PRSSA -affiliated, student-run public relations agency, which provided services for 10 paying and two pro-bono clients in the last year.

The Department is also home to numerous award-winning students and faculty, including Fulbright scholars, PRSA Gold Key Award for Excellence in Academics winners, Bateman Competition honorable mention, W2O Group ambassadors, and the LAGRANT Foundation Scholarship winners.
