Job Summary

The Director of Student Success, under the direction of the Associate Dean for Academics, serves as the inaugural leader of the Center within College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE). The Director role requires a highly motivated individual with vision, enthusiasm, and leadership qualities who has significant responsibility for developing and implementing student success and advising services that promote engagement, retention, degree progress, and timely graduation. This position develops strategies and initiatives for student success in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academics, and aligns the Center services and goals with those of the University and the California State University System such as Graduation Initiative 2025. The Director must create the Center to be highly responsive to evolving student needs and implement services that address diverse student populations - e.g., students who are remote/virtual vs. local/on-campus, “traditional” undergraduates vs adult learners, career starter vs. career transitioner, etc. The Director serves as the lead academic advisor, provides advising and highly complex student services, engages in outreach and recruitment activities, oversees student advisors/Student Services Professionals (SSPs), and builds relationships with college communities, San Jose Online units, and relevant campus offices.

The College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE) has two academic units which offer programs in both regular and special session: the School of Information (SOI) and Department of Applied Data Science (ADS). CPGE is growing its academic programs, and offers four master’s degree programs, two certificate programs, and a new undergraduate degree in Information Science and Data Analytics (BS ISDA). Additionally, San Jose State University is growing its undergraduate degree programs via CPGE’s academic units as well as through university-wide initiatives such as San Jose Online.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direction to the Student Success Center staff (Student Services Professionals, ASA admin) to facilitate daily work flow and maintain healthy, productive, and effective advising environment.
  • In coordination with the Associate Dean for Academics, develop an annual budget for the Center and forecast expenses.
  • Work with the Associate Dean for Academics and Dean to develop the strategic direction of the Student Success Center and develop strategies and actions to improve student success in the college and for San Jose Online programs.
  • Resolve and recommend a course of action for students in difficult academic situations where guidelines do not exist or are not acceptable.
  • Advise students on general university policies and procedures, including filing petitions, course substitutions, and referring students to other campus resources when applicable.
  • Coordinate with SSPs and Associate Dean for Academics to conduct outreach at orientations for first-year and transfer students.
  • Serve as the Center’s liaison to the University and College Advising Councils.
  • Interact and confer with the college faculty, staff, and peer advisors, campus resource center staff, community college deans, and transfer center coordinators.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of General Education requirements.
  • Ability to analyze budgetary data, conduct preliminary analyses, and make accurate projections using business mathematics.
  • Thorough knowledge of advising-related methods, procedures and practices.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups regarding complex student-related matters.
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.
  • Ability to set and implement a strategic plan for an organization/unit.
  • Ability to extract and analyze data from Institutional Research.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated ability to use university systems such as: PeopleSoft, Google Apps, MS Office, Qualtrics, Zoom.
  • Ability to effectively represent the College in discussions across campus and in the community.
  • Working knowledge of staff and student recruitment, appointment and annual evaluation procedures.
  • Experience with day-to-day management of the administrative operations and staff personnel functions for the Center.


Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in areas relevant and applicable to the roles/responsibilities of the position
  • Three years’ experience in a student advising capacity in higher education.
  • Experience managing staff or serving as a work lead.


Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional IV
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,300/month - $7,000/month
Hiring Range: $5,351/month - $7,633/month
