The Center for Science and Math Education ( CSME ), Loyola University Chicago ( LUC ), is dedicated to enhancing students’ opportunities for learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in K-12 and undergraduate education. Our partnerships, professional learning programs, and research focus on inclusive approaches that enhance teaching, learning, and development of literacy in science and math, particularly among groups historically marginalized from full participation in STEM disciplines. We invite applications for the position of CSME Assistant Director for Science Programs ( ADSP ). The ADSP will support the Center’s current work in science education in K-12 and undergraduate contexts and advance future work and innovation through partnerships, additional grant funding, and expansion of fee-for-service contracts. This position is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty appointment with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2021. Salary range is from $80,000 to $90,000, commensurate with experience.

This search is part of a University-wide, multi-year hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the pursuit of external grants. Of special interest are candidates who can further the University’s efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Reporting to the CSME Director, the Assistant Director for Science Programs will oversee the design and implementation of all K-12 science programs and teacher professional learning efforts, including coordination of the work of a K-12 science coaching team. In addition, the position will involve development and implementation of programs of innovative instructional and inclusive excellence in undergraduate science education in the LUC College of Arts and Sciences, School of Environmental Sustainability, and School of Education. There will be a teaching appointment of one course per semester (Fall and Spring) in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and/or Engineering Sciences. In addition, candidates also must be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.

Qualifications

Candidates for the position must have a master’s or doctoral (preferred) degree in a field related to science or science education; 5+ years’ experience as a K-12 science teacher and/or administrator, preferably in urban schools; experience in providing professional development for science teachers, preferably in urban settings; and experience teaching post-secondary science courses. Candidates must demonstrate ability to develop and direct programs in science education at the K-12 level, the post-secondary level, or both. Candidates should have knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards ( NGSS ) and their instructional implications and an understanding of how mathematics, science, and literacy can be integrated in instruction. Preferred candidates will have knowledge of Chicago Public Schools and its science curricula, and a demonstrated ability to obtain and manage grants, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM education.
