This position is primarily responsible for management of the University's chemical inventory in accordance with the NCDEQ' s regulations as well as federal EPA requirements in handling and disposal of all waste chemicals. Prepare and submit emissions calculations to comply with NCDEQ regulations for air permits. Ensure compliance to OSHA Hazard Communication and laboratory standards. Perform all related employee training. Monitor radiation and bio-safety conditions for compliance with federal standards. Maintain SDS database/files, removes waste from labs and takes to storage facility; consolidates waste for disposal. Secondary responsibilities for this position include responding to after hour (on-call) safety-related situations. The position must effectively communicate regulations in a concise and accurate manner (i.e., EPA, OSHA, NCDEQ, OSFM and other Federal/State safety regulations). Completes duties in a responsible manner, establishes and recommends procedural changes to ensure safety standards and methods are applied, determines corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified. This position works with a diverse group including faculty, staff, students, the public as well as external agency representatives. This position must manage sensitive matters in a professional manner.
