VR Network Programmer, Defense Critical Language and Cultural Program
The Defense Critical Language and Culture Program (DCLCP) at the Mansfield Center, University of Montana, invites applications for the position of a VR Network Programmer . The person in this position will develop and manage a multi-player capability for its ongoing Virtual Reality (VR) tool development project. This VR tool enables our students to navigate a VR environment to practice and test language and culture skills.
Using Unreal Engine software (Blueprints / C++), the person assigned to this position will develop and manage a multi-player capability for students to use the VR tool to interact with each other and instructors. The individual in this role will establish and manage a networked multi-player system supporting several training locations. The employee occupying this position will develop multi-player capabilities, establish network servers, maintain and monitor servers, navigate client U.S. government firewalls protocols, and manage the network system.
Once the multi-player capability is established, the person in this position will also assist the VR developer with VR asset modification and asset management.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Write clean, well-tested, performant code
- Write and maintain technical design and software system documentation
- Create and improve VR and AR interaction systems
- Provide software configuration and management support; manage network
- Provide immersive environment system enhancement and software integration
- Modify Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to continuously improve the user experience within this environment.
- Participate in weekly meetings with team members; ensure effective communication and collaboration within the section.
The individual assigned to this position will be expected to carry out routine and unusual duties described herein with a high degree of independence and a minimum of supervision. The person assigned to this role will be expected to exercise sound judgment in decision-making and resourcefulness as part of a team.
- Experience or strong interest working on multiplayer games
- Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communications skills, including the ability to work and lead diverse groups of individuals and create and maintain effective working relationships.
- High capacity to organize, prioritize, pay attention to detail, solve problems and make decisions with autonomy and with proper treatment of confidential and sensitive information.

- Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take action regarding the issues that arise.
- Ability to follow best practices, development processes, and coding standards
- Able to identify opportunities for improving our general or application workflows, and implement these changes
- Ability to grasp the complexity of project planning and implementation, including scope of work, time estimation and resource allocation
- Ability to manage work autonomously, multi-task, and meet fast evolving deadlines with a curiosity and passion for building rich user experiences
- Ability to prioritize, plan, and organize work
- Must be an effective communicator, both verbally and written
- A great attitude with an emphasis on design excellence
Minimum Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalency) in computer science or a related discipline, in addition to two (2) years of closely related experience; or any combination of experience and education that provides the competencies necessary to successfully discharge the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position.
- Experience in Virtual Reality development
- Unity 3D (or alternative 3D software) development experience

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year,
