Area Citrus IPM Advisor

Location Headquarters.  Lindcove Research and Extension Center, Exeter, CA

 

Purpose. The Area Citrus IPM Advisor is responsible for conducting research, extension and education programs in integrated pest management for arthropod pests of citrus with the goal of improving production and economic viability of citrus production in the San Joaquin Valley.

1. Address issues in management of arthropod pests of citrus using IPM strategies through applied research and extension education programs to disseminate information to San Joaquin Valley citrus production and industry clientele.
2. Support pest management in citrus production throughout California.
3. The Area IPM Advisor will be a member of the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program (ipm.ucanr.edu) and will participate in UC IPM activities, including development and review of UC IPM online and print publication, organizational meetings, and other programmatic activities relevant to the mission and strategic plan of the Program.

This position is co-funded by Citrus Research Board for a period of ten years with intent for co-funded renewal. Continuation beyond the initial ten-year term is contingent upon agreement by both UC ANR and Citrus Research Board, with review of need and available funding taking place before the term end date. This is not an academic career-track appointment and is not eligible for indefinite status.

Counties of Responsibility. This position is focused on citrus IPM in Tulare, Fresno, Madera, and Kern Counties. There is opportunity to work collaboratively statewide.

 

Reporting Relationship: The CE advisor serves under the administrative guidance of the Director of the University of California Lindcove Research and Extension Center and under the programmatic guidance of the Director of the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program. 

Qualifications and Skills Required  Required Qualifications

Education:   A minimum of a master's degree in entomology or closely related field of study is required at the time of appointment. A Ph.D. in entomology is preferred.

 

Additional Requirements: 

 

• The position requires the CE advisor to have a combination of knowledge and experience in integrated pest management of arthropod pests in citrus production.
• Demonstrated ability in applied agricultural research is required and extension experience is highly desirable.
• The CE Advisor must possess or obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License prior to applying or supervising the application of any pesticide.
• A valid driver’s license is required and the ability to lift 40 pounds.

To be successful, CE Advisors require skills in the following: ability to address immediate issues and develop forward-looking programs that will have a positive impact on the environment and economic viability of the growers and the community; ability to work with regulators to develop policies related to citrus pest management; ability to acquire external funding in order to conduct research and extension programs.

The candidate should have a deep understanding of key concepts related to integrated pest management in citrus production and be able to design and implement a program that leads to positive changes and impact within the community and beyond.

Salary & Benefits

Benefits: The University of California offers comprehensive benefits including vacation, sick leave, and approximately thirteen paid holidays per year. This position is eligible for sabbatical leave privileges as per the terms of University policy.
