Executive Director, Principal Gifts
The Executive Director of Principal Gifts will coordinate and guide the University of Maryland’s relationship-building efforts with its highest level donors and prospective donors with the objective of increasing their engagement with and philanthropic support of the University in the near and long-term. The Executive Director (ED) reports to the Vice President of University Relations and will work closely with the President, Provost, other senior leaders of the institution, the senior leaders of University Relations, Trustees of the UMCP Foundation, and other volunteer leaders.
The ED will promote collaborative effort and coordinated action to ensure the engagement of donors and prospective donors is seamless and reinforcing, leading to a greater understanding and appreciation of the University and its programs, confidence in its direction and leadership, and stronger interest in supporting the institution.
The ED role is multi-faceted and requires adaptability. At times, the ED will work directly with high level prospects, while at other times, they play a behind-the-scenes role in support of others, such as the President, Vice President of University Relations, volunteers, and development officers. The ED’s effective authority is driven by professionalism and trust, adherence to the values of the University, providing thoughtful counsel on relationship-building strategies, and ensuring timely execution of agreed-upon actions.
Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree required.
A minimum of 10 years of experience in fundraising or a closely related high level field. Candidates must also have at least 5 years of supervisory experience, experience managing and working with volunteers, and experience in fundraising campaigns. Further, candidates must demonstrate successful experience and effectiveness in principal gift fundraising.

• Excellent interpersonal, writing, and listening skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and with high level prospects and donors, and C-suite executives in the corporate, non-profit, and political spheres.
• Demonstrated ability to develop successful cultivation and solicitation strategies.
• Ability to shift from a frontline and directorial role to a coaching and support role.
• Experience managing staff and budgets.
• Ability to work both independently and part of a team.
• Basic knowledge and appreciation of public research universities, and an understanding of university relations/advancement functions.
