CENTER BRIEF:

The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research studies of infectious diseases and behavioral health, and a training program.

The Center has a mission to work in partnership with American Indian tribes to raise the health status and self-sufficiency of American Indian people to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) research, 2) service, and 3) training.

The goals of the infectious disease prevention projects are to evaluate the impact and efficacy of research projects aimed at improving health outcomes for Native American families and communities. Study data results will focus on public health outcomes specific to the approved protocols at the worksite.

GENERAL SUMMARY / PURPOSE:

The Research Nurse Supervisor works for the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health (Center) as part of its infectious disease prevention team. This is a full-time position. This position works together with the Center’s field and Baltimore-based research team to assist in the development, coordination and delivery of field-based public health services.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a Research Nurse Supervisor for the Center’s field-based infectious disease prevention projects.

  • Responsible for the management of all activities at field research sites.

  • Supervise nursing staff and field health workers.

  • Assure staff compliance with University and Center policies and procedures.

  • Assure efficient, complete and accurate implementation of all aspects of multiple study protocols.

  • Interact on a regular basis with Johns Hopkins faculty members. Work in a team setting with physicians, pharmacists and nurses within the Indian Health Service facilities and collaborating hospitals and clinics where our programs are located. Maintain external contact with members of the research study sponsoring agency, independent research monitors, and ancillary Center staff.

  • Make daily decisions regarding organizational aspects and logistics of study protocols.

  • Supervise data collection, entry, compilation and timely submission of summary reports, accurate record-keeping of all study participant data. Review for document accuracy and processing as needed.

  • Supervise enrollment of study participants, appointments of study participants, monitoring of clinic visits and hospitalizations of study participants, chart reviews, home visits, specimen collection and processing, interviews and study subject follow-up.

  • Administer and supervise the administering of immunizations.

  • Ensure adherence to administrative guidelines for vehicles, supplies and other project property.

  • Ensure proper screening of eligible subjects for participation in research and service projects.

  • Administer informed consent.

  • Travel to and perform home and hospital-based visits as required by the study protocols.

  • Coordinate study documentation - printing/filing/copying/scanning for transmission to appropriate field sites and the Baltimore-based research office.

  • Responsible for transportation of and delivery of services to enrolled study participants as directed by field-based investigators, supervisors and coordinators.

  • Provide follow-up services to individuals as outlined in the study protocol.

  • Facilitate community-based meetings and events including the presentation of study approval requests, project progress and goals achieved.

  • Work with study team members on duties related to the general conduct of the study and participate in staff meetings to review project goals and protocols.

  • Travel to field-based training meetings on a regular basis with overnight travel as needed. Travel to other field sites to assist with training of staff and other site duties as needed.

  • Assist with other Center-wide programmatic duties as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (MANDATORY):

  • Research Nurse licensed in the state that the position is located, be part of the Nursing Compact, or have a 90 day temporary license issued by the state where they will be working prior to their start of employment.

  • 3 years of nursing research experience.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related discipline.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Research experience.

  • Venipuncture and specimen collection experience.


SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be comfortable completing invasive procedures including specimen collection (nasal, saliva, urine, blood) and other samples from participants; proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing; excellent organizational and time management skills; independent and self-motivated; highly organized and detail oriented; ability to manage multiple and competing priorities; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and within a variety of cultures.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS OR SPECIALIZED CERTIFICATIONS:

  • This position will maintain current nurse licensure.

SPECIFIC PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and pharmacological agents.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
