Psychology Instructor (One Year Position)

General Summary

ANTICIPATED DATE OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is a full-time, one-year temporary faculty position, from September 2021 to June 2022. This one year position has a 40- to 42-credit (or its equivalent) course load.

Essential Tasks

Teaching: a range of lower-division psychology courses such as general psychology, lifespan, abnormal, human sexuality, research methods, or biopsychology. Requires using online course management technology. May include evening/weekend, online, hybrid, and/or off campus sections. Advise students in developing and monitoring their academic plans.

Service: Engage in department, division, and college initiatives; participate in shared governance; promote the college's values, and perform other contracted duties (for example, advising) as required.

Professional development: Maintain competence in teaching and the discipline through professional development activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in psychology or closely related area such as: cognitive science, neuropsychology, counseling psychology, applied psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or clinical psychology. For closely related areas, transcripts should reflect significant psychology coursework. Pending degrees must be completed by September 2021, and verified by a letter from the granting institution.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Higher education teaching experience in coursework as identified under responsibilities;
  

• Proficient in a language(s) in addition to English;
  

• Experience teaching face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid classes using Canvas;
  

• Significant experience working in multicultural/diverse environments;
  

• Experience designing active, learner-centered, culturally responsive instruction (This includes designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment that are relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate to the practice of biology);
  

• Experience incorporating research-based practices to teaching and assessment;

• Evidence of challenging learners intellectually (This includes encouraging students to ask questions, confront limits, recognize complexities, think critically, and challenge assumptions);

• Evidence of effective communication (This includes conveying information and expectations clearly, listening carefully, encouraging students to communicate, and acting with respect, enthusiasm, and empathy toward students);
• Significant experience collaborating effectively with colleagues.

THE DEPARTMENT
The Psychology Department is a collaborative group of faculty who stress best practices in teaching and learning. The department offers a range of courses for students who are interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology at a transfer institution, as well as students in professional/technical programs, and those earning social science distribution credit.
