SALARY:
This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Typically that includes teaching 45 credits and participating in departmental and college-wide activities. Salary is based on the negotiated faculty salary schedule. Initial placement typically ranges from $58,050 to $66,450 (depending on the candidate's qualifications) for a 9 month contract (170 instructional days).

Essential Tasks

SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• To teach courses in plant biology, microbiology, cell biology, and environmental science/ecology. Note that teaching assignments may include evening/weekend, on-line, hybrid, off-campus classes, and face-to-face classes when appropriate.
• To advise students and help develop/monitor their academic and career plans.
• To regularly assess student learning outcomes at the course, department, and college level.
• To serve on campus committees and contribute to campus governance.
• To participate in continued professional development biology educator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Master's degree (or higher) in biology, botany, ecology, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or its international equivalent (pending degrees must be verified by a letter from the granting institution).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• College teaching experience, preferably in the community college level;
• Strong background in plant biology and microbiology and one or more of the following: molecular biology, cell biology, ecology, environmental science, evolution, plant pathology;
• Experience teaching face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid classes using Canvas;
• Significant experience working in multicultural/diverse environments;
• Experience designing active, learner-centered, culturally responsive instruction (This includes designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment that are relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate to the practice of biology);
• Experience incorporating research-based practices to teaching and assessment;
• Evidence of challenging learners intellectually (This includes encouraging students to ask questions, confront limits, recognize complexities, think critically, and challenge assumptions);
• Evidence of effective communication (This includes conveying information and expectations clearly, listening carefully, encouraging students to communicate, and acting with respect, enthusiasm, and empathy toward students);
• Significant experience collaborating effectively with colleagues;
• Fluency in an additional language.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Biology Department currently consists of five tenured faculty plus several adjunct faculty. Key academic programs include preparation for biology majors, health professionals, and general science students. Highline is also home to the Marine Science and Technology center (MaST), a waterfront marine lab and aquarium that supports a strong marine science program.
