Job Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Arizona campus is hiring an experienced HVAC Technician to support the Facilities Management Team. Embry-Riddle's Prescott Campus is respected worldwide for cutting-edge instruction and training for tomorrow’s aviation, aerospace, security and intelligence leaders. Prescott is a mile-high city and its climate reflects seasonable weather excellent for flying. Daytime averages are 80°F in the summer and 45°F in the winter. At 5,000 ft. above sea level, it boasts a mild climate, clean air, pristine wilderness areas, and nearby national forests. The university is a small, private, residential university in the mountains of Arizona with approximately 3,500 students. Staff/faculty/student interaction is highly valued and is a central theme of our campus. It is located 100 miles north of Phoenix and 120 miles south of the Grand Canyon.


Tuesday through Saturday from 0900 to 1730

The HVAC, Refrigeration & EMS Tech performs duties necessary to operate and maintain the commercial grade heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems to provide a comfortable environment in classrooms, laboratories, offices and residence halls on campus. Tasks include trouble-shooting and repair efforts on commercial grade heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration systems and multi-zone systems that incorporate pneumatic, electronic, and/or programmable logic controls. Performs diagnosis, repair and installation of such components.

  • Responds to assigned work orders in a timely manner, ensures job is completed to the campus standard and closes the work order out through the handheld tablet linked to the CMMS system.

  • Maintains ventilation systems on campus. Tests, troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment that is not functioning.

  • Maintains heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration systems on campus. Tests, troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment that is not functioning. Obtains price quotations on materials and purchases materials such as sheet metal, compressors, and fans, from suppliers.

  • Maintains refrigeration systems on campus. Tests equipment to verify that equipment is functioning.

  • Trouble-shoots and diagnoses equipment that is not functioning.

  • Schedules heating/air conditioning installation assignments. Examines installed heating/air conditioning systems to verify that system is functioning.

  • Repairing/replacing HVAC and mechanical system components, as needed. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product. Maintains time and production records.

  • Observes safety and security procedures; determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; reports potentially unsafe conditions; uses equipment and materials properly.

  • Facilitates completion of HVAC related PM (Preventive Maintenance) and creates PM work order check lists for new equipment.

  • Researches and selects materials for HVAC systems installation, repair and maintenance and performs quality repairs and maintenance on campus HVAC equipment as required.

  • Operates and monitors the EMS (Energy Management System – Johnson Controls).

  • Attends classes and seminars (classroom or online) on HVAC components and system design to update skills.

  • Support the campus recycling and environmental programs relative to their department.

Required Education:

  • Read and comprehend instructions, write information, and complete simple forms. High school (or GED) level ability in spelling, grammar, basic composition, and math.

  • Formal diploma/certificate/degree program of 6-18 months after high school. Area of study: HVAC.

Required licenses, certificates, and /or security clearances :

  • Refrigerant handling

Required skills, knowledge, abilities :

  • 3+ years – using an Energy Management System (EMS), preferably Johnson Controls system

  • 3+ years - progressively responsible HVAC or refrigeration equipment installation, maintenance and repair experience.

  • Refrigerant-handling certification at the Universal level.

  • Solid knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration. Solid knowledge of repair, maintenance and installation techniques.

  • Skill in analyzing HVAC or refrigeration malfunctions from performance and test equipment readings and determining

  • and performing appropriate repairs.

  • Arizona Driver’s License and clean MVD driving record and the ability to operate campus vehicles and equipment in a

  • safe, responsible manner

  • Ability to remain awake and alert at all times.

  • Ability to use computer tablet to input work order service details in to the CMMS system

  • Must be able to lift heavy objects.

Required minimum number of years work related experience:

  • 3-5 years
