Job Summary

The Athletics Grounds Superintendent independently plans, directs, and coordinates groundskeeping and landscape operations for the Athletics facilities and surrounding grounds.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to

Plans, directs, coordinates, and supervises all aspects of assigned grounds maintenance and services for the Athletic Department under the direction of the Associate AD for Facilities & Operations.

Develops and implements grounds maintenance standards and schedules.

Develops and implements plans to reduce environmental impacts in compliance with South Florida Water Management District and Corps of Engineers requirements.

Manages outside vendor contracts for equipment and services related to the Athletics Grounds.

Ensures all staff are properly trained to perform their jobs.

Oversees landscaping projects to ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and security standards.

Assists in preparation of the annual grounds budget.

Recommends and implements operating policies and procedures to ensure efficiency of operations.

Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.

Provide consultation to physical plant on different methods, needs and problems with the other fields and large grass areas on main campus.

Other Duties

Complies with all University, ASUN Conference, or Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) regulations, as applicable, as well as all NCAA rules and regulations. Remains current with all changes in NCAA, as well as changes to University, ASUN Conference and CCSA rules and regulations, as applicable, regarding intercollegiate athletics. This includes the requirement for self-reporting any possible rule violations. Any violation of NCAA rules is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Assists with the maintenance and upkeep of department’s field maintenance vehicles and golf cart fleet, including facilitation of repairs. Assists with the maintenance of departmental vehicles, including regular oil changes and cleanings.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Eight years of related full-time work experience in groundskeeping experience, including familiarity with sports turf management.

Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Experience supervising and delegating the work of others.

Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience maintaining skinned infield for Baseball or Softball.

Experience in building and maintaining baseball mounds and home plates.

Experience working with coaches and administrators.

Experience in diagnosing and repairing irrigation and maintaining pump systems.

Experience establishing and maintaining budgets.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of landscape design, landscaping, horticultural techniques.

Knowledge of various turf grasses, Florida native vegetation, turf grass insects, weeds, and diseases.

Knowledge in field construction, including the installation of drainage and irrigation, choosing a root zone, and establishing turf species.

Knowledge in field renovations, including deep tilling, maintaining infield skins, adding soil for drainage, seeding, sodding, lip removal, aeration, and top dressing.

Knowledge and ability to maintain and repair irrigation systems.

Knowledge of the hazardous waste regulations as they pertain to substances used.

Knowledge of project and cost control techniques.

Skill in identifying complex problems to develop options and implement solutions.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to anticipate and diffuse problems before they occur.

Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.

Ability to effectively oversee the work of others by providing information, guidance, instruction, and motivation.

Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic relations with colleagues, vendors, and other stakeholders.

Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and diverse demands are involved.

Salary Range - $40,000 - $50,000 annually
