Penn State Erie, The Behrend College is seeking a Researcher to conduct policy-relevant aquatic environmental research focused on Ballast Water transfers of aquatic species, particularly in the area of monitoring strategies to prevent transfer of AIS within the Great Lakes. The position is a 36 week non-tenure track position funded for one year with the potential for renewal. The position is based in the Washington DC area with up to 25% travel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a researcher on project focused on ballast water transfers of aquatic species.
  • Plans and execute repeated measures, harbor monitoring protocol for detecting reproducing populations of aquatic invasive species.
  • Develop and lead quality assurance and quality control framework for the project.
  • Works closely with federal, state and local policy-makers, scientists, and shipping industry stakeholders to develop policy-relevant research that advances the development of systems for preventing the transfer of aquatic species via ballast water.


Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a discipline related to environmental policy.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience conducting aquatic environmental research involving multiple, diverse stakeholders.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of ballast water-mediated transfer of aquatic invasive species.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience developing policy options for control of ballast water-mediated transfer of aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes.
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with regulatory frameworks for preventing ballast water discharges detrimental to freshwater receiving systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop positive relations with multiple stakeholders and to facilitate collaborative planning processes.
  • Excellent representational, presentation and writing skills.
  • Willingness to work remotely and travel up to 25%.
