Description

University of Washington, Department of Medicine

Division Head, Nephrology

The Department of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) is recruiting a new Nephrology Division Head. Our Division includes 45 paid faculty members across four major clinical sites and more than 30 staff members. The successful candidate will be expected to be a leader in fostering a diverse and collaborative environment built on mutual respect while championing the clinical, education and research missions of the Division.

Clinical: Our clinical sites include UW Medical Center (a major quaternary referral center for a 5-state region), Harborview Medical Center (a level 1 trauma center and safety net hospital), and the Seattle VA Hospital. Our ambulatory dialysis program is closely affiliated with the non-profit Northwest Kidney Centers, the very first outpatient dialysis organization in the world. Our faculty expertise and multi-disciplinary clinical programs include: kidney transplantation, glomerular diseases, onco-nephrology, palliative nephrology, genetic kidney diseases, hepatorenal disease, cardiorenal disease, hypertension, diabetic kidney disease, home dialysis, and stone disease. We are fortunate to be supported by a world-renowned renal pathology service staffed by five faculty members.

Education: Our faculty are actively involved in medical student, resident and fellow teaching. Our Division includes an ACGME nephrology fellowship training program with 11 fellows and two additional subspecialty fellowships (kidney transplant and home dialysis/policy fellowship). We have a robust research fellowship supported by an NIH T32, now in its 37th year of funding.

Research: The UW Division of Nephrology is committed to supporting clinical, translational and basic science research that seeks to reduce the burden of kidney disease in the population and improve the lives of people living with kidney disease. Our Division receives over $20 million annually in direct funds from research grants and contracts. Our diverse research initiatives focus on improving understanding of underlying disease mechanisms, identifying potential therapeutic targets, testing novel interventions, improving health outcomes, reducing health disparities, strengthening health care delivery and informing health policy relevant to people with kidney disease.  The vibrant research environment within our Division is supported by the superb infrastructure of the Kidney Research Institute (a unique partnership between UW Medicine and the Northwest Kidney Centers) and through partnership with the UW School of Public Health and the VA Puget Sound Research and Development Service.
