Spring Hill College, a Jesuit, Catholic liberal arts college, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Sociology and Criminology with the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor beginning in Fall of 2021. The position requires a terminal degree in Sociology, Criminology, Criminal Justice, the Administration of Justice, or a closely related field. The J.D. alone is not a sufficient qualification for a tenure-track appointment. We are seeking someone broadly trained in Criminology or Criminal Justice to expand our concentration in criminology, including developing a more robust online footprint. All specializations are encouraged to apply. Those who hold a Ph.D. or are ABD near a defense date will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, while those who are ABD without a defense date will be appointed at the rank of Instructor. An appointment to a more senior rank is possible for those who have achieved tenure at another institution.

The Department of Sociology at Spring Hill College is a small department with a strong commitment to student success. Teaching is the primary focus of the institution and the department, but an expectation of ongoing scholarly development and service also accompanies the position. The program enjoys steady enrollment of over 50 majors, opportunities for student research and internships, and extensive support for community engagement. Building on Spring Hill College’s core curriculum, we presently offer the B.A. with a concentration in general sociology and a B.A. in sociology with a concentration in criminology. The person who fills this position will help create a BA or BS in criminology or criminal justice to be housed in the department, so the capacity to teach broadly and develop courses and curriculum is necessary, as is a demonstrated understanding of the liberal arts tradition in which the program will grow.  You may also visit http://www.shc.edu/jobs

Review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until the position is filled. To apply, send letter of interest, current CV, and a statement on teaching to Harold Dorton, Professor and Department Chair of Sociology, at hdorton@shc.edu  Please include “FACULTY SEARCH” in the subject heading. Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address, with “FACULTY SEARCH” and applicant’s last name in the subject heading.
