Position Summary:

The Assistant Chancellor for Student Success (ACSS) is responsible for ensuring that UW-River Falls provides an enriched educational environment that supports the overall development and success of each student in the context of their academics, personal health and wellness, and fit within the university community. The ACSS works with academic leadership to develop and implement strategies for improving student success and overall retention by bringing together key areas of academic and student support to provide a holistic foundation for student learning, academic success and personal growth. This position will coordinate efforts to improve student retention and graduation at UW-River Falls.

The ACSS reports to the Chancellor, while also working closely with the Provost, providing advice and perspective on matters pertaining to student academic engagement and student life, including student needs and concerns, and how they relate to academic success. This position provides direct supervision, leadership development, and advocates on behalf of the following units: Student Success (this includes Exploratory Advising, New Student and Family Programs, Tutoring Services, Aspire Program, and TRiO Student Support Services); Ability Services; Career Services; Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging; and Student Health and Counseling. The individual is also expected to work closely with leaders in other key areas that support student success such as Student Involvement, Residence Life, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning to develop new programming and strategies that will improve student retention. The individual will serve on both Chancellor’s Cabinet and Provost’s Council to ensure continuity between enhanced student support strategies and academic success. For purposes of representing the university with the UW System, the ACSS serves as the Senior Student Affairs Officer.

The ACSS works directly with all levels and areas of the University, including faculty, academic staff, university staff, and student shared governance. This position will work directly with student senate to advise them and advocate on their behalf.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Master’s minimum, doctorate preferred from an accredited institution in area appropriate for the position.
  2. Minimum 7 years of professional experience in higher education, 10 or more years preferred. Minimum 5 years of directly managing one or more programs aimed at improving student success and retention.
  3. Evidence of ability to use data and research to make decisions on improving student success and retention.
  4. Proven strong managerial and collegial leadership in student success programs or related academic areas.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of administrative support areas including fiscal, human resource management and information technology.
  6. Strategic budget management and fiscal planning skills.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of student health and well-being, includes mental health.
  8. Proven support for students with disabilities within diversity initiatives, practices, and policies.
  9. Demonstrated commitment and experience working with campus climate issues, including equity, diversity and inclusivity within a higher education environment.
  10. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills in working with a diverse community. 
  11. Successful experiences in conflict resolution.
  12. Demonstrated leadership in issues concerning student recruitment, retention and graduation, and advocacy.
