Assistant Professor in Biomechanics

Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level effective August 2021. Those with expertise in biomechanics as well as broader scholarly interests in theoretical, computational, and/or experimental methods to investigate biological systems at any scale are encouraged to apply. The successful candidates will be responsible for developing a strong externally sponsored research program, teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentoring students. Some of the primary responsibilities include, developing and maintaining a nationally and internationally recognized research program, publishing in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings, obtaining sponsored funding in support of research programs, teaching undergraduate and graduate coursework in the department's programs, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in departmental, college, and university committees, collaborating in research projects with other faculty from BEAM, as well as with faculty from other departments within the College of Engineering, the university, and the scientific community, serving the profession through relevant professional activities.

BEAM is an interdisciplinary department with faculty having broad interests spanning engineering, science, mathematics, and medicine. It offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering and in engineering mechanics, and currently has 42 faculty, a new undergraduate biomedical engineering program, and nearly 200 graduate students. The department and its School for Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES) combine the strengths of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, the Virginia Tech Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS), the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Required Qualifications

Candidates should have a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, engineering mechanics, or a closely related discipline, prior to the effective date of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Postdoctoral experience leading projects beyond graduate school is preferred.
