Position Overview:

The Library Specialist provides specialized, in-depth services to Library patrons by responding to inquiries and providing requested library information resources utilizing a variety of electronic and print resources. The Library Specialist typically performs a variety of complex operations or services related to a particular collection, branch library, or technical area. The Library Specialist interacts with fellow Library employees, other employees on campus, faculty, and students, may hire, train, and supervise full and part-time staff and student library assistants, and may interact with colleagues of other libraries statewide or with library vendors. May help to develop and effective and efficient staff by training, supervising, assigning work, and reviewing the work of full and part time employees and student workers.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Chambers Library, this position provides professional expertise in the services and projects of the Archives and Special Collections department. Works collaboratively within the department to determine appropriate approaches to preparing collections for use. Processes manuscript collections utilizing standard best practices. Creates and maintains accessible, retrievable computer archives and databases incorporating current advances in electric storage technology. Researches and records origin and historical significance of archival materials seeking information from various sources with a critical eye. Assists in the preparation of inventories, guides, indexes and other appropriate finding aids in digital format for efficient access. Assists with maintenance of donor information and files. May supervise workers who assist in arranging, preserving, describing, and maintaining collections of valuable materials. Serves on the department's reference desk assisting with research services for students, faculty, staff, and other patrons needing archival materials. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Experience Required:

Requires a university degree in field plus 3+ years of relevant experience in the chosen field or 7+ years of equivalent work experience that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred:

Two years supervisory experience. Experience working in academic libraries.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of Windows-based computer applications and Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of library information systems and electronic databases. The ability to present complex information clearly. Must meet physical demands of position which include standing, lifting, reaching, and pushing book carts and working in a noisy environment during peak periods.
