The Theater Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year beginning in the fall semester of 2021-22, and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.

The Theater Department at Oberlin College offers both a major and a minor in Theater, with concentrations in acting; directing; design and technical theater; arts management; stage management; and theater history/critical studies. Comprised of three acting/directing and one critical studies/performance faculty members, the Department is also staffed by designers and technical personnel, who teach in their fields and are instrumental in producing three faculty-directed mainstage shows as well as a number of student-directed productions each academic year. Our students often create and perform original interdisciplinary works.

The incumbent will teach a total of five courses in the general area of theater history, performance Studies and/or theatrical practices. The successful candidate will have evidence of exceptional teaching and scholarship, preferably with an emphasis on the integration of theoretical and performative approaches. Expertise is desirable in one or more of the following fields: playwrighting; dramaturgy; dramatic literatures; directing; devised work; gender and LGBTQIA+ studies; African Diasporic, Asian/Pacific, Indigenous, and/or Latinx cultural traditions. The Visiting Assistant Professor’s five courses will include a two-semester required sequence in Theater History and three courses of their own design. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence in working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D degree in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2021-22. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
