Job Description Summary

The Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Research Professor with a specialty in Forest Seedling Production and Regeneration. This is a 4-year limited term appointment. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of funds. This is a 12-month, non-tenure-track position committed to research associated with the Auburn University Southern Forest Nursery Management Cooperative. The Nursery Cooperative’s mission is to develop and disseminate cultural, biological and chemical technologies for the economical production and utilization of forest-tree seedlings in the southern U.S. Initiated in 1972, the Nursery Cooperative membership currently consists of 4 forest industries, 7 state forestry commissions, 3 private nurseries, and the Forest Service. Coop members produce approximately 83% of the forest-tree seedlings grown in the Southern U.S. Research falls into one of four general areas: pesticide evaluation, nursery cultural practices, minimization of environmental impacts, and optimal seedling production. Responsibilities:
• Incumbent will participate in an on-going research and technology transfer program involving industry, state, and private forest-tree bareroot and container seedling nurseries.
• Will engage actively in research, collection and statistical analysis of data, development of experimental designs and/or protocols that address Nursery Cooperative priorities. In the past this has included methyl bromide alternatives, fertility trials, fungicidal tests, seedling cultural trials, weed control, biological treatments, etc.
• An undergraduate/graduate course will be taught yearly by the incumbent that focuses on seedling regeneration and production in the Southern United States.
• The incumbent will participate in writing research reports, technical notes and Newsletter articles for Nursery Cooperative Members.
• Will participate in presentations at Nursery Cooperative meetings and at regional or national meetings of relevance.
• Will be required to travel to nursery field sites across the southeastern U.S. to install experiments, collect data and serve as a liaison with Nursery Cooperative Members in a limited diagnostic capacity.
• Will work with the EPA, USDA and APHIS to address the needs of Cooperative Members with respect to pesticide issues.
• May be required to supervise technicians and undergraduate students.

Minimum Qualifications

• A PhD with at least one degree in forestry, horticulture or agronomy at the time employment begins.
• Minimum of 2 years nursery research experience

Desired Qualifications

• A degree or specialization in plant pathology, plant physiology or entomology.
• A strong understanding of the interactions of forest seedling production and the insects, diseases and weeds that affect seedling health.
• An understanding of pesticide-use and regulations..
