Associate Dean

 

School of Engineering, Science, and Technology

Central Connecticut State University invites applications for a full-time, Associate Dean in the School of Engineering, Science and Technology. The Associate Dean assists the Dean and the Dean’s Office with a range of school activities as defined by the Dean that may include but not be limited to administration of academic programs, outreach and community engagement, infrastructures and facilities, budgetary matters, and personnel. The Associate Dean assists in the coordination of accreditation activities within the School.

Position Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Dean may be selected to function as the Dean's designee and represent the Dean to the School's diverse constituencies, and in issues concerning the School of Engineering, Science & Technology as needed.
  • Assists in managing resource allocations and is responsible for preparing reports, information and materials, and compiling and analyzing data that may be related to the School’s budget, enrollment, faculty affairs, etc.
  • Oversees specific issues defined by the Dean related to undergraduate and graduate academic programs which may include student progress, student complaints, grade appeals, dismissals, academic misconduct, etc., as needed.
  • The Associate Dean has year-round responsibility to work closely with department chairs to identify needs and make recommendations to the Dean regarding new/updated guidelines and procedures and takes part in scheduling the courses offered within the School for day, evening and summer classes.
  • Facilitates and coordinates advising activities that precede each registration period and other activities.
  • Supervises technical laboratories with regard to scheduling, space utilization, safety procedures, lab development, lab improvement and inventory.
  • Coordinates all capital budget purchases for the School.
  • Provides assistance to faculty in external grant development and procurement and initiates School-wide grant applications.
  • Assists the Dean in overseeing and facilitating accreditation activities and curriculum-related-issues in academic departments.
  • May manage special programs of study.
  • May coordinate and facilitate new academic program initiatives.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in the discipline represented in the school.
  • Seven years of relevant experience in higher education.
  • Four years of the experience must have been in academic administration.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in an environment requiring the ability to relate to students at different levels of academic progress preferred.
  • Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may also be considered.

This includes 7,605 full-time undergraduates, 1,949 part-time undergraduates, 648 full-time graduate students, and 1,678 part-time graduate students. A third of its undergraduates are students of color, the largest group being Hispanic. Ninety-three percent of the students are from Connecticut. The Community: Located nine miles southwest of Hartford, New Britain is a city of some 70,000. Part of the Greater Hartford area of 1.2 million residents, New Britain is centrally located in the state and is within easy reach of much of Connecticut and several metropolitan areas in the region. New Britain’s population is characterized by a high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Known as “Little Poland,” 17 percent of its population are of Polish background. It is the home of three Polish language newspapers and one television station, and annually hosts the Little Poland Festival. Significant portions of its population come from Puerto Rican, Italian, and Irish backgrounds. Currently, 37 percent of its population are Hispanic; 11 percent are African American; 25 percent live below the poverty line.

In addition to all that Hartford provides, New Britain is 40 minutes from Springfield, Mass., two hours from Boston, and two hours from New York City. It is also part of the Hartford-Springfield “Knowledge Corridor” and, therefore, within easy driving distance of a host of private and public institutions of higher education and many cultural opportunities.
