Assistant Professor - Geology

Position Summary 

This Assistant Professor position teaches fundamentals of modern structural geology at the undergraduate level.  In addition, they instruct introductory geology classes and geologic field methods, and advanced courses that complement the existing departmental expertise and mission.  

Minimum Qualifications 

• A completed doctorate by August 15, 2021 in Geosciences or related field with an emphasis on structural geology.  
• Indicated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and active engagement in research and scholarship involving undergraduate students.  
• Research and/or professional experience in a topic(s) related to structural geology and demonstrated potential to involve students in research.  

• Commitment to high quality teaching and supportive mentoring of diverse students from a wide range of backgrounds.  
• A valid driver’s license and ability to drive a 15-passenger van.  
• Meet and sustain a satisfactory driving record that meets and the underwriting requirements of the College insurance company.  

Preferred Qualifications 

• Integration of structural geology with other disciplines, especially in the context of regional tectonics.  

• Successful college teaching experience, particularly using of modern pedagogical techniques.  
• Experience teaching geology in the field.  
• Ability to teach and mentor students on interdisciplinary topics.  
• Application of structural geology methods to geologic hazards, resource development, and/or environmental conservation.  
• Familiarity with the geology of the Rocky Mountains and southwestern United States.  

• An interest in using existing departmental resources (scanning electron microscope, analog deformation lab, drill core library) in teaching and research.  

Major Responsibilities 

• Teach courses in Structural Geology, Geologic Field Methods, and Introductory geology.  
• Contribute to the Department Field Geology course.  
• Lead and conduct research or other scholarly work involving undergraduate students.  

• Perform research or other scholarly activity, ideally with student participation and support  
• Supervise undergraduate research projects (which are required for all Geology majors) and serve as an academic advisor for Geology majors.  
• Participate in college and departmental service.  
• Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.  
• Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.  

• Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.  
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Compensation  

Salary is $57,500, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
